The Invitation

by Oriah/Mountain Dreamer, Native American Elder, May 1994

"It doesn't interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing.

It doesn't interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dreams, for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon. I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life's betrayals or have become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain.

I want to know if you can sit with the pain, mine or your own, without moving to hide it or fake it, or fix it.

I want to know if you can be with joy, mine, or your own; if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, be realistic, or to remember the limitations of being human.

It doesn't interest me if the story you're telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself; if you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul. I want to know if you can be faithful and therefore be trustworthy.

I want to know if you can see beauty even when it is not pretty every day, and if you can source your life from its presence.

I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and still stand on the edge of a lake and shout to the silver of the full moons. "YES!"

It doesn't interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up after the night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done for the children.

It doesn't interest me to know who you are, how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.

It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away.

I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments...."

~"But all what I have learned in this life has lead to this point in time, and that is LOVE is all that matters, to love unconditionally. You may say, "But how can I love that person that did this to me?" To answer that is to ask what lesson did you learn from that harm...And the next answer is, when you look at this person that hurt you, look past his/her physical body and see the ~soul, spirit, essence,~ in that person and know that they are beings of love and light as you are.... They may not be aware of it, but you are, and that is all that is needed for you to see that light shining within them....And know that one day, they too will see that light within themselves and forgive themselves."~

Love and kindness are never wasted. They always make a difference. They bless the one who receives them, and they bless you, the giver. --Barbara De Angelis--

The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, nor the kindly smile nor the joy of companionship, it is the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when he discovers that someone else believes in him and is willing to trust him...--Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

A person experiences life as something separated from the rest — a kind of optical delusion of consciousness. Our task must be to free ourselves from this self-imposed prison, and through compassion, to find the reality of ONEness.

A much loved and oft read bit of wisdom. Something I try to return to at least once each day.

My thanks to you for posting it as a gentle reminder.

When I was making the directory Tobias sent me a quote, author unknown, that has affected me: if you keep doing what you are doing you'll keep getting what you are getting.

Anybody know?

Probably another hiatus, a quiet stepping away rather than dramatic announcement of departure.

When next we meet in VP I'll whisper, Drakani. Someone was spreading unpleasant things about him, and he may have decided to just give it up. I wouldn't blame him if he did. In our strange vp rumors are given as much weight as solemn truth. Ain't it a shame?

I thought I would hitch on to your quotes..
