Here's a question I hope someone can help me with. Got a gf in a different chat venue, her character is in Torvaldsland, north of the northern forest, built into the south side of the Hrimgar mountains.

Would it be possible, given the location, to grow a garden, flowers, vegetables, either in the soil or in a hothouse? Which would be natural or possible within roleplay?

My first inclination would be to say it's a little far-fetched but I don't know much about that area. Someone help me out pls?

Thanks.

It would have to do a lot with how close she was to the Stream of Torvald which allows for farming in the North. My thought behing behind the mountains it be too far away for flowers and plants. Have to look at a plausible map to be sure. Maybe relocate to get the benefits. Rumor has it Silver Ship Movers are offering a discount.

Well she ain't gonna 'ave the likes of date trees up there, but I'ma sure there's some sorta vegetation ya ken find there.

I try to draw a comparison to earth when tryin' to figure out what type o' flora would be present an' then give it the Gorean kick. I do that with cookin' an' gardenin'. So, I'd imagine the climate would be a lot like the climate o' ummm... the Alps, maybe? The further down the slope, the warmer it is and the more fertile/workable the soil. An' from wot I recall there are many a flower, pretty, dainty ones that grow in colder climates. Pansies, ken bloom in the snow. So think o' the flowers that grow in earth's colder regions (look at the back o' seed packets an' see which ones grow up north in America) an' then ummm... figger out wot Gorean flowers are most like 'em.... an'.... toss in some imagination...

I'ma thinkin' that things like this... ya dinna 'ave to walk the straight an' narrow an' use jest the flora from the books. But, ya could also meet a compromise iff'n she wants the correct stuff... an' refer to the flowers by the description she 'as o' them an' not be a name... does that make sense?

'ell see if Midnight's Silver Ship Movers will fed-ex 'er some super 'ardy flaminium!!! 'ave 'er git into hybreds!!!

Oh, is she interested in a skillet by any chance?

Torvaldsland is a cruel, harsh, rocky land. It contains many cliffs, inlets and mountains. Its arable soil is thin and found in patches. The size of the average farm is very small. Good soil is rare and highly prized. Communication between farms is often by sea, in small boats. Without the stream of Torvald it would probably be impossible to raise cereal crops in sufficient quantity to feed even its relatively sparse population. There is often not enough food under any conditions, particularly in northern Torvaldsland, and famine is not unknown. In such cases men feed on bark, and lichens and seaweed. It is not strange that the young men of Torvaldsland often look to the sea, and beyond it, for their fortunes. Marauders of Gor , p 54.

As Midnight said depends on the exact location but as the above quote says the land is rocky and dont yield much crop wise. I hope this helps smile.

They could just drink ale, I am sure We of the Black Sword Tavern can supply them at a good price. Only thing the transportion cost would be High. Send us a note by tarn and we will get working on brewing some of Ar's finest.

smiles Greetings
girl looked up her information on farming on gor in FLN's training comm..Marauders deals mostly with Torvaldsland so most of girls information is from there

they had a short growing season so they were just smart about it planted in the fall so plants would sprout in early spring...

the most common flower is the wild dina aka the slave flower
Forkbeard had tospit orchards
and they also grew a variety of vegetables that were hearty enough to survive that dreaded cold smiles
Here are some quotes girl searched out for Your Friend Mistress...girl hopes the information is helpful...

"… the dina is a small, lovely, multiply petaled flower,
short-stemmed, and blooming in a turf of green leaves,
usually on the slopes of hills, in the northern temperate
zones of Gor; in its budding, though in few other ways,
it resembles a rose; it is an exotic,
alien flower;
it is also spoken of, in the north, where it grows
most frequently, as the slave flower…"
— Slave Girl of Gor, page 61.

"There is often not enough food under any conditions,
particularly I n northern Torvaldsland,
and famine is not known. In such cases men
feed on bark, and lichens and seaweed."
— Marauders of Gor, page 55.

"I saw too, fields, fenced with rocks, in the sloping area.
In them were growing, small at this season,
shafts of Sa-Tarna; too, there would be peas,
and beans, cabbages and onions,
and patches of the golden sul,
capable of surviving at this latitude."

"…who tumbled onions, turnips, radishes,
potatoes and bread into the feed trough."

"Ottar dug for the Forkbeard and myself two radishes
and we, wiping the dirt from them, ate them."
— Marauders of Gor, page 102.

"The northern Sa-Tarna, in its rows, yellow and sprouting,
was about ten inches high.
The growing season at this latitude,
mitigated by the Torvaldstream,
was about one hundred and twenty days.
This crop had actually been sown the preceding fall,
a month following the harvest festival.
It is sown early enough, however,
that, before the deep frosts temporarily stop growth,
a good root system can develop.
Then, in the warmth of the spring, in the softening soil,
the plants, hardy and rugged, again assert themselves.
The yield of the fall-sown Sa-Tarna is,
statistically, larger than that of the spring-sown varieties."

"On the way back to the hall, cutting
through the tospit trees, we had passed by the sul patch."
— Marauders of Gor, page 103.

— Marauders of Gor, page 102.

— Outlaw of Gor, page 155.
— Marauders of Gor, page 81.
"The tospits, in the Forkbeard's orchard, which can grow at this latitude,
as the larma cannot, were too green to eat. I smiled, ecalling that tospits
almost invariably have an odd number of seeds,
saving the rarer, long-stemmed variety.
I do not care too much for tospits, as they are quite bitter.
Some men like them. They are commonly used, sliced and sweetened
with honey, and in syrups, and to flavor, with their juices,
a variety of dishes. They are also excellent in the prevention of nutritional
deficiencies at sea, in long voyages,
containing, I expect, a great deal of vitamin C.
They are sometimes called the seaman's larma.
They are a fairly hardfleshed fruit, and are not difficult to dry and store.
On the serpents they are carried in small barrels,
usually kept, with vegetables, under the overturned keel of the longboat."
— Marauders of Gor, page 102.
smiles and goes back to sewing a new tunic for Master...
