| Torrie | New or Recycle? posted on: 3/16/2007 2:03:48 AM I posted this on another board but am interested in the comments from the general Gorean community as well. This topic has always been of interest to me since so many are changing their names like some change underware and I'm not speaking of slaves that are sold, capped, or given away. Most often the new Owner will change their name and they have no choice but I'm speaking of the Free that do this. Now a few things come to mind when a new person shows up. Is he/she really new or just someone changing their name to hide, have a new start, or some other excuse. Were they killed off, die of some illness, or just got bored with their old role? Most that come back using a new name make the same mistake over and over. You can change your name but you seldom, if ever, can change your inner characteristics and mannerisms and those alone will give you away. Here are some questions to think about: When does a person stop giving the "new" character a chance to learn? Do we listen to the general populace or take a gamble on the person really trying to change? Was the person upfront in who they were and if so, do we take the chance regardless the reason for the change? If the person wasnt up front and we later learn who they were, do we turn our backs on them and force them to move on even tho they appear to have learned from their previous life? |

New or Recycle?
replied on: 3/16/2007 11:03:55 AM Torrie, I think it's a personal choice. I made a personal choice in collaring ala even knowing the background and history. Beast made a personal choice in collaring phex/eferon et al. Fact is, none of us can control what other people do in chat or in role play. We can only depend on them to be honest, to play fairly, to do the right thing. We can choose to be the ONE that gives that "player" one more chance or we can turn our backs. Neither answer is right for everyone and neither answer is wrong for everyone. It all boils down to personal choice. Go with it or walk away. We can't, none of us, ever really KNOW that person behind the screen. Hell, you can live with a person for years and not ever really know them. These are questions no one can answer for you. Take the information you have about that person and listen to your gut instincts. |

replied on: 3/16/2007 2:27:51 PM There are many reasons to change characters. I guess it all depends on the underlying reasons for the change. To start fresh for errors is one. Other's may choose to change characters, they wish to develop a character that is completely different from a previous role. Hence another reason to change names. I do agree with Tryp. Each person has to decide for themselves and not just follow the band wagon. Sure the advice of other's one must listen to, but we all have our own inner voice that guides us. Ultimately the decisions we make are our own. That is what makes me Free, I choose for myself what I wish to do. I will listen to advice of those I respect, but at the end of the day only I can decide what I really wish to do. Do I give that person yet one more chance or do I wash my hands of him/her? Be well. |

New or Recycle?
replied on: 3/17/2007 12:06:11 PM Thank you both for your comments. So far I have been using my gut feelings and things have turned out ok. Some stayed at the Keep until they were established again, others didnt and proved, over all, they hadnt changed. I was just curious how others in our beloved Community were handling this since there has been a huge influx of new/recycle people of late. |

replied on: 5/11/2007 11:24:33 AM Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. People will always change names to get over on others, its life, its human nature (for some). The only thing some can do is to not let the ones who do harm in. |
