So I'm hoping these ideas will be helpful to all. *be sure the use of your beans doesn't go to waste. With 3 rest days every sim, that means that you'll always want to use the beans to leave a player with an amount of injury days left that is a multiple of 3. In other words, let's say I have a guy with 6 days left on his injury. Do I want to use any beans to heal him early? Well, if you're going to use any at all, you might as well use 3. If you just use 1 or 2, it will still take him 2 sims to heal completely, same as if you hadn't used any at all. If you use 3, you get him back a day early. *because of the above rule, using ONE bean to heal any injured player is not a bad idea at all. All injuries are either 4,7,10,25, or 40 days long. Subtracting one from any of those numbers leaves you with a multiple of 3, meaning that for just a single bean, you will bring that player back a day early. *when using beans to heal a player a day early, be sure that you actually play on that day so that it's not a waste. *If you play twice on a day, you might think about using extra beans to bring back key players at that time. In addition to the above, there are also strategies on when to use your beans. I can think of 2 major ones. *use them early and often. Get the most out of your beans by making sure that none go to waste. *Don't use them until you need to, hoard them and save them for emergencies. This way, if you have a clump of injuries all at once, you can get yourself out of the jam. In addition, if a key player gets a long term injury, you may be able to use a lot of beans to significantly decrease his injury time. If you do this, be careful not to hoard so many that you end up wasting them, as they are only good during the regular season. I'm sure there are more ideas, so I welcome further discussion on this issue. |

With all due respect, at ‘this’ juncture, before we’ve even begun Preseason, it’s my guess that teams are more-interested in setting their Lines and perhaps making some trades (even with the FAP) than they are in a discussion of Magic Beans. For those who have no idea what Brad is talking about (smile Brad), the rules governing beans can be found near the very end of the league rules: --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- MAGIC BEANS * For every 3 fights that a team has during the regular season, a ‘magic bean’ is earned. Magic beans may be exchanged for 1 rest day for 1 player per bean. So if you have 60 fights during the regular season, you'll be able to ‘magically’ heal 20 rest days. * A team’s number of fights can be determined by consulting the team-by-team player stats. The final column, ‘FM,’ indicates Fighting Majors. * The idea behind the magic bean rule is to simulate the effects of having a rugged lineup. A team that has more fights is generally better at protecting its players. * In the interest of simplicity, when players are traded, their Fighting Majors will carry-over to their new team. Although this ‘conceivably’ could result in a team abusing the rule, it is the league’s feeling that it won’t. This situation will be monitored. If necessary, the rule will be revised. * Due to multiple injuries, if a team is unable to dress 12 Forwards or 6 Dmen, the commissioner has the authority to use ‘1 bean only’ (if the team has one) when doing so will correct that situation. That bean will ‘not’ be used to dress a 13th Forward or 7th Dman unless a team cannot otherwise dress 18 skaters. Important Note: Magic Beans apply ‘only’ to injuries that occur during the regular season. They do not carry-over to postseason and cannot be used IN postseason. However, at the end of the regular season (before the playoffs begin) playoff teams may use their remaining beans to reduce existing injuries. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Seriously, Brad’s suggestions are helpful. replied on: 1/30/2008 11:30:40 PM With several new GMs, I thought it would be a good idea to bring up the beans discussion. Also, a couple new thoughts to add to the above list of useful strategies: *If you're thinking of playing your tough guys sparingly, put them in against other teams who routinely get lots of fights. If you put your fighters in against the real life Red Wings, they're still not likely to get into fights. But if they go in against the AHL Predators, you ought to get 1 or more fights in a game. *another strategy if you plan to use your tough guys part time: play them early, so that you get some beans saved up if you need them. If you get a key injury and don't have any beans saved up, it's too late to start. But if you gather up several and then are able to stay healthy, you can always rest your tough guys then. If you wait till the later parts of the season to start dressing them, many of your injuries have probably already come and gone, and you may end up wasting the beans. I started doing a write up of the tough guys for each team, and was saddened by the fact that the NHL Red Wings of the last 5 years would beat up at least half of the AHL teams. If you look at your roster and your biggest, toughest, scariest sob is Keith Tkachuk, Darcy Tucker, Andrew Ladd, Chris Gratton, Nick Boynton, Rob Davison, Craig Adams, or Tom Kostopoulous, you really should be ashamed. |

replied on: 2/1/2008 3:05:31 PM While I do enjoy the physical aspect of the game, I don't enjoy the emphasis on fighting as perhaps some of the other GM's do. That said, I don't object to it. I'm certainly not going to skate thugs just for the stake of "being in the game" as far as the fighting majors. I'd prefer to reduce penalties, have a positive PP/PK differential, and win more games. Magic beans, are interesting, but I think the amount of time spent on them would be better served if it were spent on keeping the web page current and moving the league along in a timely manner....just my two cents..good luck to everyone this season. replied on: 2/1/2008 4:02:18 PM I hear you Jerry. You're not the only one who's not that into the fighting. In fact in my experience in fantasy hockey, so little value is placed on the tough guys that they often get passed up for terrible players (guys with 2 on D, very little offense, and no toughness) on the 4th line and such. As far as penalties go, there are plenty of good fighters who don't pick up an excess of the types of penalties that put their team shorthanded. It's an assumption that's not always true, that all tough guys mean more time shorthanded. One of the benefits of skating a pure fighter that I also think gets overlooked is that I'd rather have a Derek Boogaard, even with his poor ratings, playing 3 minutes a game and leaving extra ice time for my top players at his position. Many teams skate a 4th line guy who sucks up 12 minutes of ice time but sucks . |

Keeps them honest I feel, but I am not going to skate them, even if I had them, just to skate them. I would rather just double shift a guy that can log some minutes, and have that extra crappy guy to suck up the minutes when he is tired. Ed Leafs |

replied on: 2/2/2008 8:15:11 AM I think you have to get the most out of the rules in every league. This is just my second league and I know there are those of you that have a lot more experience. Every commish has set up a league that opens up feature for us to use and explore in the rules. The team that in the long run stretches the rules to the limit is more likely to go home with more cups. This league has the magic bean feature among others those who uses it to the limit will succeed. I am not say that teams not using the beans wont win. Because they can and will but they could actually make their teams better by using the rules. In the same words, taking lots of minor penalties have never put any team in good position. I for one, thank you for the informative piece on how to strategically use the beans. I now feel ready to start exploring the special rules of this league because i think my team will profit from it in the long run. I wont mind if others don't use, actually that might help me as well.
