current gms doing double duty with vacant teams?
posted on: 12/21/2008 7:13:11 PM

We might give this a shot. A few gms have offered to take over for the vacant teams in the meantime, until a permanent gm can be found. This would allow them to do the trading for that team, as well as help out with the lineups.

We'd probably have to make sure that nobody is taking over a team that is in the same division as their permanent team, and that they can't make trades between their two teams.

Thoughts?

You could also appoint a committee of 4 GMs with your vote being #5 in deciding if trades made by those teams are in the best interest of the franchise and league.
The committee could help with any league decisions for that matter.
Then with the committee, if a GM running two clubs on an interim basis, had a trade in mind that could help both clubs, the trade could be presented and approved or disapproved by the committee.
Of course, the committee should not be have a GM who is running two clubs as a committee member.

I"m in favor of the double duty concept, we just can't have teams not being managed. I can volunteer to take on an additional team on an interim basis, but what are we currently doing to find replacement owners?

I've posted messages looking for new blood on at least 5 hockey related forums. I've also posted twice on the hockeydisk yahoo group, which is I believe the primary place that apba leaguers' all converge. I've had zero luck on all of those.

My next idea was to raid the other similar simulator's forums...HLS2, Faceoff, Eastside etc. Many of those players may not even know of APBA...

The last hockeydisk post I have a record of seeking new GM's was on Oct 31st, I'd probably try that avenue once again. If we're going to have current GM's temporarily handling teams, we should probably get those reigns into their hands now so they can begin to manage the rosters. If it's one comittee to handle all the vacant teams, we should probably expedite that as well. Either way, sooner is better than later.

Personally, I’m not in favor of any type of committee to oversee things. I don’t regard it as necessary. To the contrary I feel that it would do more harm than good, by delaying approval of trades.

If anyone’s memory needs refreshing, the idea of a committee was floated ‘last’ season (please refer to Brad’s “new trade policy?” post, the last post was on 3/26/2008). We had a lengthy discussion on the idea of a committee, with a consensus opposing it. Most GM’s wanted their (proposed) trades left alone.

In addition I don’t see an issue with a GM handling a vacant team in the same division or with a proposed trade between his regular team and his vacant team. As always, all trades would be subject to approval. As always, if Brad felt a trade ‘might be’ overly one-sided, he’d have the option of seeking another opinion before approving it.

I think it should go without saying that the GM’s who volunteer to (temporarily) run a vacant team are active members who would act in the best interests of a vacant franchise.

Currently we have five vacancies. To my knowledge three of us—Dick, Jerry and myself—have offered to run a team until some new GM’s can be found. There are others who may be willing to help out.

Brad, is it your intent to handle (if necessary) one of the vacant teams yourself?

Brad, correct me if I’m wrong but I believe that the first new GM would be given his ‘choice’ of the five vacant teams. At that point the ‘replaced’ volunteer could (if so desired) take over for another volunteer who might need a break.

Otherwise, I agree with Jerry that ‘whatever’ is decided upon should be implemented ASAP. Having frozen rosters is not in the best interests of the vacant franchises or the league.

yes. I will run a vacant team too. For those of you willing to take on an extra team for the time being, let me know if you have a preference which team. We'll get these figured out in time for the preseason.

I also agree that a committee isn't entirely necessary, if I have any questions there are a handful of you that I'm used to asking for a second opinion, so we'll just keep doing it that way.

And yes, any new gm would get their pick of the vacant teams.
