replied on: 5/24/2003 9:46:51 AM I'm sure she won't mind. Just remember this: Rogues aren't good with traps until about 7th level, and that is only if you make them that way. If you don't, expect to get screwed by them. It's just the way the system is set up, nothing personal. Traps are lethal in 3E. |

replied on: 5/24/2003 10:09:23 AM Personally, I make all my rogues different. With the skills and feats, you can customize him to be exactly what you want. You want an Acrobat? There are wonderful skills... Tumble, Balance, Perform. You want a Con-Artist? Forgery, Gather Information, Sense Motive, Innuendo, Bluff. You want a Dungeon Delver/Cat-Burglar? Search, Spot, Listen, Climb, Open Lock, Disable Device. So, as you can see, its highly cusomtizable to your needs and wants as a class. |

replied on: 5/25/2003 8:34:44 AM kk...another question: Do halflings and elves maybe get a plus to their comeliness scores? and dwarves and half-orcs get a minus to theirs? If so, how much? If not, fine. |

replied on: 5/25/2003 9:29:28 AM How do I get feats? Do they just automatically come to me or do I have to pay for them? do I have a "feat point" pool like the skill point pool? |

replied on: 5/25/2003 10:08:55 AM There is no Comeliness score, technically. Jeni added it. Simply roll it normally, without any modifiers. Half-Orcs suffer a penalty to Charisma; they are the only race to suffer a penalty to that attribute. All characters get 1 feat. Humans gain an extra one. Fighters gain an additional extra one that MUST come from the Fighter Bonus Feat list. So, a Human Fighter would begin the game with 3 feats. Yes, you automatically gain feats, provided you meet the prerequisites. |

replied on: 5/25/2003 10:34:07 AM Ok, so from this huge list of feats, I can only choose ONE at first level? That SRD is full of holes, you know, guys. The feats aren't divided into classes, for one thing and it doesn't say what feats you get at what level for another. It also does not tell you how to figure out what your attack roll is...they used to be called THAC0s...this is annoying... |

replied on: 5/25/2003 10:57:59 AM To figure your attack roll, you get a thing called "Base Attack Bonus." You modify that with your appropriate attribute (Strength for melee, Dexterity for ranged) to give you your total modifier to attack. A rogue begins the game with a +0 BAB. All warrior types (Barbarian, Fighter, Ranger, and Paladin) gain +1 BAB/Level. The feats are not split into "classes" because anyone who meets the prerequisites can take ANY feat. Fighters have a special list that they get EXTRA feats from, but they still have access to ALL the others. It is very hard for some character types to get certain feats, because it goes against the "concept" of the class. Example, a fighter would have to take a level of a spellcasting class to get Scribe Scroll, but, you could still get the feat, if you were willing to make that sacrifice. EVERY character gains an additional feat every 3rd level. So, at 3rd level, you get another feat, then at 6th, and 9th, and so on. You must have ALL the prerequisites to take a feat, which means if you have to have 3 different ones, you're waiting for a while. The hardest feats to get (like Whirlwind Attack) are easiest to get by being a Fighter because that class gives the most feats (and if you look, you'll see every feat listed for Whirlwind Attack is on the Fighter Bonus Feat list...) Some classes, like Ranger, gives "virtual" feats at 1st level. Some classes give bonus feats when you've reached a certain level in the class. All this is covered in the character creation chapter. Maybe you downloaded a poor SRD version, but it's actually easier to follow than the PHB is... |

replied on: 5/25/2003 12:24:08 PM Like I stated earlier, Comeliness is not Charisma, its how others see you. If you have a high Comeliness score, then other will see you as beautiful, where if you have a low Comeliness, they see you as ugly. Charisma is how you see yourself, your sense of self, Comeliness is your physical beauty. Since you are a Rogue, you do only get 1 feat, as Lobian said. The feats that would best suit you, depending on how you want to play are: Combat Reflexes, Dodge, Expertise, Improved Iniative, Iron Will, Lightning Reflexes, Point Blank Shot, Power Attack, Skill Focus, Toughness... Personally, I'd go with either Expertise or Dodge, as these will help gaining the powerful feats later on. Now, if you want to metagame and really want to be powerful at higher levels, I'd take a few levels as a fighter, so you have more feats. Also as Lobian stated, they are not by level because if you meet them earlier, then you can get them earlier. All depends on how you choose. There are no set rules in how to play, so feats just make your character more customizable. Touching on Attack Rolls a little more, Base Attack Bonus is very similar to Thac0. Where Thac0 is 20 at first level, meaning to hit armor class 0 you must roll a 20. In D&D3e, you are now given Base Attack. Since you are not playing a Fighter Type, you don't have a bonus to hit yet. So, say you are going against something that has AC15. You must roll a 15 or higher to hit them. Now if you had a +1BAB you would need a 14 or higher to hit him. AC in D&D3e goes up, rather than down. The higher the better, which is why you need a higher BAB to hit. Simple really. =) Also, unlike AD&D 2nd, there is no max on your AC. I believe the max for 2nd is -10. In D&D3e, if you have an AC40, it is possible. Depending on what you choose as your starting package (Armor and such) you will probably have about an AC of 16 or so. The Base of 10, add in armor, such as Studded Leather which is 3 with a max Dex of +5. Now if your Dex is, say a 16, which is a +3. So base of 10 plus 3 from your armor, and 3 from your Dex gives you an AC of 16. Character Creation Example |

replied on: 5/25/2003 2:29:38 PM This is exactly why I tell all new players to create a Fighter first. It is the easiest, simplest class. Get the basics down before moving to the more complicated concepts. The game has dramatic differences from previous editions, but, once the basics are learned, it's a freaking breeze. |

replied on: 5/26/2003 9:42:57 AM well...as of right now, my AC is at 19...my skills are, well, I have 16 skills and 4 of them are base 2's, the rest are base 3's. I still have 50 gold and change left to spend, but I have no idea what to spend it on as I have all my equipment, including a shortsword, 4 daggers and studded leather. I was unaware of the fact that each class had feats that they automatically recieved at first level until I read your elven rogue bit...What are "Rogue Weapons"? I assume shortswords, daggers, shortbows, mayhap longswords, saps and such are all to be found in this list, but it would be nice to have as that SRD SUCKS!!! When they say it covers the "basics" for a d20 system, that is exactly what they mean...BASIC. I recommend getting rid of that SRD and finding a better one more suited to the needs of a D&D community, like maybe an actual D&D SRD? |

replied on: 5/26/2003 6:50:33 PM ONLY Fighters have a "bonus feat list." Very few classes "get extra feats" at 1st level. The classes that do are Fighter and Ranger. Cleric "can" but ONLY if you take the War domain. Wizards get bonus feats every 5th level in the class, but it has to be a metamagic or item creation feat (though the Wizard can take Spell Mastery as well). Your posted character had some slight changes that needed to be made. You don't "have" to spend all your money. "Rogue weapons" are the weapons listed in the class abilities section of the Rogue under weapon proficiencies. The SRD does not "suck." It is easier to understand than the player's handbook. What makes it easier is to not even try to think 3E is ANYTHING like 2E or 1E because it is NOT. Forget what you knew before when it comes to character creation. EVERYTHING works differently. It took me a while to get used to it, but after creating 5-6 characters, the system was so fucking easy I can do it in less than 6 minutes now. Just get a concept, roll dice, plug, plug, write down. Wow. Done. I don't even need the freaking books to do it. You'll get there, if you want. |

replied on: 5/26/2003 11:18:19 PM LOL...When I said that it sucked, I was referring to the fact that it leaves some things out because it is for any d20 game, not just D&D. It is good as a general reference, but it has its flaws, that is all I was saying |
