How would you feel if I ran a game that showed the basics, then had you join in after the game had already started? You may not vote until you are logged in! Results (total votes = 4):

replied on: 5/22/2003 6:57:28 PM Yup. We'll see how the game I have set up now goes. If no one really seems interested in joining, then I'll use that as the "training" game. |

replied on: 5/22/2003 8:52:03 PM The whole 3e setup is still confusing as all hell, but I'm willing to learn to figure it out. Somehow, someway... :p |

3e game...?
replied on: 5/22/2003 11:34:43 PM Well, what I mean is, I don't have the 3e books, and whoever did the Open Gaming references that Jeni provided didn't do a very good job (imo). The changes they made such as the new will and fortitude saves, as well as the basics on feats & skills weren't explained very well, if at all. |

replied on: 5/23/2003 12:47:42 AM Fort saves are for anything that involves attacking the body, like petrification. Simple? That's in in the basics. Will is for anything that attacks the mind, like an enchantment spell. All you have to do is know the total, add it to your d20 roll, and try to get higher than the DC (the number to succeed). Example: My character Sar'vit has a Fort of +5 (base of +2 from class, with his Con adding +3 more), and he gets hit by a ghoul. The ghoul's attack says "make a Fort save (DC 15) to avoid being paralyzed." I roll a 8 on my d20. 8+5=13 < 15, so I fail and get paralyzed and probably killed afterwards. Feats are simply special abilities your character has. Most have prerequisites. For example, you can't have Power Attack (which is a representation of being wildly brutal when you attack) without a 13 or higher Strength. All 1st level characters gain 1 feat. Humans gain an additional 1 at 1st level, and fighters get an extra one (but the fighter extra one has to come from the list designated as "Fighter Bonus Feats." "Virtual" feats are something you can use but don't truly have. Example, Jeni's character has Weapon Focus, but if she ever changes deities, she loses it because she doesn't actually "have" Weapon Focus. Metamagic feats manipulate spells, and usually increase the spell slot for casting purposes. Example: an empowered fireball doesn't cast as a 3rd level spell, it casts as a 5th for what slot you have to use to cast it, but all other features are treated normally. Item Creation feats let you make magic items by spending money and experience. Skills are the skills you have. and the numbe rof them depends on the class you have, and your character's Intelligence. Rogues get the most skills. Each time you spend a point on a skill in your class's skill list, you get 1 rank (there is a maximum amount to the total ranks you may have in any single skill equal to your class level +3). If you want to get a rank in a skill your class doesn't have access to (it must be a skill that is not designated as exclusive), you must spend 2 skill points. The mximum for cross-class (as this is called) is 1/2 the total for your "class skills." It gets more complicated when you add more than one class, but that is the basics of it. Any other questions? Should I go into more detail? |

replied on: 5/23/2003 6:53:38 PM Well, that definitely makes alot more sense. However, do the Fort & Will saves completely replace the old saving throws? or just the PPD and such? |

replied on: 5/23/2003 8:44:42 PM There are only three saves in 3E: Fort, Will, and Reflex. They replace, completely, all previous versions of saving throws, making it MUCH simpler and easier. Now, instead of having to think "does this require a save vs DM?" You can just say "Fort save." "Does this require a save vs. Spell?" "Will save if mind-affecting, Fort if attacking the body, Reflex if you can dodge it (like a fireball)." All special attacks and spells list what save they use, and they specifically state when SR (spell resistance, the replacement for MR%) applies, making that a LOT easier to play. AC in 3E increases, and all penalties are penalties (reducing your score). You ALWAYS want to roll high, and you ALWAYS want bonuses. That's the basic concept. There are a couple more complicated things, like stacking bonuses, but, even that's not so hard once you know what it means. |

replied on: 5/24/2003 12:39:41 AM Thanks much Lobian. I can see how it'd be simpler, maybe even easier, but since I'm so used to previous editions, it'll take some getting used to. But I definitely understand it a bit better now. Maybe I'll join in on Jeni's game for a proper crash course... *evil grin* |

replied on: 5/24/2003 4:15:13 AM If anything, the game would go slowly, so you'd learn the system. Once you've got the basic down, the game is very easy. |

replied on: 5/24/2003 8:37:36 AM Hrmm...mebbe i'll join in with a half-orc killing ex-gladiator <eviller grin> I have played 3rd Edition before, even converted some of my old 2nd edition chars over to 3rd (VERY interesting to do...) something I recommend everyone try at least once, heh. But I am stubborn and prefer 2nd edition to 3rd. If you twist my arm just hard enough, Jeni, I may join |
