replied on: 5/19/2003 8:22:37 PM Can be, I guess. Gets boring, especially in the old days with the huge "what does it do, hwo does it do it, and what do I have toroll to getit to work..." crap that came with Battlesystem. |

replied on: 5/19/2003 4:00:55 AM Definitely. Anyway, back to Greyhawk... there is a lot that makes it unique, especially if you're into RPG history. However, it's a setting you have to enjoy, since its not your typical "high fantasy" place, which some newer players don't like. But, it is because of its "traditional" fantasy feel that others absolutely love it. Its got gives and takes, so it depends on how you view things... also, war is MUCH more common... so, that may be enticing. |

replied on: 5/18/2003 8:46:19 PM He couldn't write himself out of wet paper sack. Like I said, I like his stories. I do, up to a point. After reading about 5 of his non-Forgotten Realms and 6 of his Forgotten Realms novels, I've concluded that the guy has a serious problem. He has yet to kill off one of the characters. All his stories are basically the same. Some of it is good, I'm just saying, he needs to be a little more creative. |

replied on: 5/18/2003 8:36:42 PM I feel sorry for you. RA Salvatore is a hack. He couldn't write his way into a good story if he didn't write it at all. |

replied on: 5/18/2003 8:05:31 PM Well, Forgotten Realms was forever changed with R.A. Salvatore. I like his books, but he's got a serious problem with "uber" characters. I liked how Drizzt killed that demon with Twinkle. Can I do that???? |

replied on: 5/18/2003 7:33:52 PM Iuz is not typical. The Free City is not typical. It just happens that the world is a "typical" medieval setting. This means a lot, but it does not mean it's boring. It's not like FR where everyone and their mother is a 3000th level spellcaster with drow ancestry. |

replied on: 5/18/2003 6:58:17 PM Sadly enough, I've never been in a campaign where we follow the books exactly, so like Lobian said, custom games. I'd like to be able to play something where we actually follow the setting. Greyhawk just doesn't do anything for me. Its your typical world. Just that...typical. |

replied on: 5/18/2003 5:12:03 PM Birthright is interesting, but not as interesting as Savage Coast, or even Al-Qadim. Hell, Maztica is different, at least until they dropped it into FR. Greyhawk is a typical medieval world, with magic disbursed across the place, with a few areas (like the Free City) having way too much (this is where 99% of all the "named" spells come from...)as well as having some interesting things, like a certain lich god... |

replied on: 5/18/2003 10:10:31 AM I completely forgot about Dark Sun...played that for a little while, but got tired of having to make 4 characters at once every time...lol. Ever played the Birthright setting? The is another interesting one... |

replied on: 5/18/2003 9:58:02 AM Look at it this way. If you have ever played D&D where you aren't playing in Forgotten Realms, or Ravenloft, or Dark Sun, you're playing in Greyhawk. Its the default setting for D&D. |
