The strongest woman in Finland, Heini Koivuniemi, right. Se has done many events around the world with great success. Dont let her good looks fool you. She is strong! She is also Miss Galaxy winner this year.
I train one woman in that sport, and this year she was 6th out of 20 competitors.

Kara Mann National Strongwoman Champ 2004

Strongwoman
by Virginia Butler
Published Jun 10, 2005

"I think that it is important to continually challenge yourself physically and mentally because in the long-run it is really going to make you a stronger person, and you are going to have better self-confidence from that."

Kara Mann National Strongwoman Champion

North American Strongman, or NAS, is the premier amateur strongman corporation in the world, but it is not just for men. Kara Mann is the National Strongwoman Champion of 2004. She is 5'6'' and weighs 165 pounds, but that does not stop her from pulling an A-4 fighter jet 47 feet or walking with 200 pounds in each hand for 200 feet in 39.37 seconds.

Mann says she does not feel awkward participating in a male-dominated sport. In fact, the fellow Strongmen have been nothing but supportive of her. Mann says: "The guys I work out with are like a network of older brothers ... They really support me, they know my limits and they make me push myself really hard to go past those limits." After all, Mann believes women can meet any challenge that men are already meeting out there.

Strength Training: When asked what Mann gets out of participating in the sport, she answers physical benefits. Strength training, which is exercise that uses resistance to strengthen muscle, benefits include:

-Increased metabolic rate, causing the body to burn more calories throughout the day

-Increasing and restoring bone density, which prevents osteoporosis

-Decreased risk of injury

-Improved balance, flexibility, mobility and stability

-Decreased risk of coronary disease

-Feeling and looking better

Free weights, weight training machines, rubber tubing, or your own bodyweight will all enhance muscular strength and endurance with as little as 20 minutes to one half hour a day of training, experts say.

Despite this passion for Strongman, Mann says her career as an engineering student at Vanderbilt University in Nashville is her priority. She says, "I think that just like Strongman, you need to prove yourself in that field, you need to work hard and make sure that you set a good example for the younger women coming into the field."

"Women have skills that are different than men, and I think they can bring to engineering a lot of things. We can make it better by being a part of it, and if we don't get women in here, we can't make the difference," says Bridget Rogers, assistant professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.
