Tower Circus
replied on: 5/26/2006 2:28:19 PM Tower Circus, Blackpool Tower - 09/04/06 Tumbling acrobats, tight-rope walking, acts of strength - all the usual suspects are rounded up for the 2006 season of Blackpool Tower Circus . . . the difference being this year that they are all women. Mooky's Angels is the name of the show and the only chap in evidence, bar the band led by Stuart Reynolds and ringmaster Harvey Seagre, are Mooky the clown and his long suffering side-kick Mr Maxi. There are thrills aplenty from the brave, strong and agile women and Mooky and Mr Maxy are a welcome rarity - clowns that are genuinely funny relying on wisecracks and one-liners for the laughs rather than just slapstick. The circus acts come from all over the globe, China, Mongolia, Russia, Italy and America. From Germany was Sylvia Brumbach, a black-clad strongwoman who juggled and spun terrific weights, tore a phone book in half and hammered nails with her bare hands. A Mongolian contortionist achieved impossible bendiness and Russian Marina Osinskaya ballet danced the high wire with no net to save her. The two hours of sheer fun and entertainment are rounded off with the traditional flooding of the ring with water fountains plus the spectacular finale of Robin Valencia, the world's only female cannonball act, being fired high above the heads of the audience. The show continues until November 5. Elaine Singleton |

German-born Sylvia Brumbach, known as The Woman of Steel, says she is about to run out of books after destroying over 100 at Blackpool Tower Circus. "I just brought 200 over from Germany ... I've used over half of them already," she told Reuters. Brumbach, who says she can tear a directory in half in around 30 seconds, has placed ads in local newspapers appealing for more books. "You have to find the right point to rip, the book must not be too old and the spine must be tough, not wobbly," she said. (c) Reuters 2006. All rights reserved. Tower Circus
replied on: 5/26/2006 2:46:47 PM Mooky’s Angels @ Tower Circus By Nikki Masters VARIETY: Mooky's Angels this summer at Blackpool Tower Circus # VARIETY: Mooky's Angels this summer at Blackpool Tower Circus Variety is alive and well at Blackpool's Tower Circus! The summer show, Mooky's Angels', is a theatrical pick and mix of comedy and bravery with lashings of glamour a perfect way to spend a couple of hours with the family. Three generations of mine were kept entertained. One even professed to hate circuses' before we went in, but admitted afterwards he had rather enjoyed himself. Happily, he discovered that the Tower Circus is not just for the kids. continued... The show's resident clown prince, Mooky (alias Laci Endresz Jnr), and his straight man Mr Maxi, direct much of their humour at the adults. Quite rightly though they delight the kids with loads of silly gags, panto style slapstick and audience participation between acts. This year's all-female cast is a diverse bunch. I'm not sure the kids knew what to make of German strong woman Sylvia Brumbach, who lifts, and even juggles with, steel bars and bowling balls. She did offer some of the weights to men in the audience to try to lift, but I'd like to have seen them step into the ring to try, just to add to the showmanship, or should that be showwomanship? The eight-strong Chongqing acrobatic troupe from China presented a faultless diablo act, and a colourful tumbling act, complete with springboards, human columns, stilt-walking, and a combination of the three. Miss Jessica provided a dash of Italian pizzazz, bravely balancing a sword on her head while climbing up and over a fiery ladder. The incredibly supple Miss Khulan from Mongolia a previous winner of best female contortionist' at the French Circus Festival delivered a graceful, if eye-watering, performance as a bendy Marilyn Monroe. Two Rolling Angels atop giant spheres rolled them up gangplanks, playing to the crowd with lots of accidental' wobbling. And truly heart stopping was the finale of The 4 Panthas act, in which two of the four dare-devil Hungarian State Circus Academy graduates were spun round 40ft off the ground, held just by a sling at the back of their neck. Definitely not one to try at home. I'm pleased to say the traditional Tower Circus fountains made a finale comeback this year, before Robin Valencia, the world's only female human cannonball, ended the show with a bang. A trip to the Tower Circus is surely one of the quickest ways to get a hit of that holiday spirit. 3:56pm Thursday 27th April 2006 |
