I'm considering a weekend there in October. Any suggestions on things to do, see, eat?
How about budget accomodations?
I'm just starting to look into it now, so if anyone could point me to any websites or anything, I'd appreciate it.

The question about Powell's is really what kind of stuff you can't get there. It's huge. They have virtually everything.

Powell's

Also they suggest a walking tour of the town.

Hey E,

I'll check and get back to you. It's a really cool city!

Portland is just up the road from me...well 85 miles up the road.

ooh thank you!
I'll just be there for a weekend and I'm staying with friends-of-friends, so I think I'll seek out a nice place to take them to dinner.

Hey no problem!

I think you'll really like it. Portland is actually one of the best 'planned' cities in the country. The downtown area is wonderful and you've got two huge rivers in town. Not to mention Mt. Hood in the background and a nice cool climate...oh and a LOT of great beer! hehe

Be sure to walk along the waterfront. It's nice. And very pretty at night too.

Here's our City Guide on Portland for good basic info: link (Yeesh, I'm just re-reading it and the em dashes were never made whole, they appear as hyphens. This disturbs me and I hang my head in shame.)

Thanks for bumping--I have a terrible time with the search function.

My friend and I booked a room at the Mallory Hotel.

Is there public transportation to the beach? I haven't looked at the links yet, so that may answer my questions.

I'll be there the last week of September.

There's public transportation pretty much everywhere in Portland. It is a VERY well planned city.

Be sure to keep an eye out the window as you fly into town, Mt. Hood on a clear day is insanely beautiful from a plane...or on the ground.

Are you guys going to have any spare time where you can get out of the city? There are a lot of cool things within an hour's drive.

I won't have a car, but am signed up for a bus/rail day trip to Mt. Hood and a bus overview tour of the city, both through the conference. I'm so excited, can't wait! I'm really interested in seeing how well-planned Portland is as I've hears a lot about it.
