I'm going to Sin City with a couple friends for four days in August. Our excuse is that one of them's getting married in September, so this is a little bit of a bachelorette party, but not really.

So while there's a good chance that we'll be drunk most of the time , we still want to get in a little bit of sightseeing along the Strip.

This is what's on my definite To Gawk At list:
Paris (to compare to the real one)
New York New York (ditto)
The Venetian
The Mirage
Caesar's Palace
MGM
Bellagio fountains

Do any of you have suggestions for restaurants, bars/clubs, or other must-sees? My personal budget for this is As Cheap As Possible, with maybe a few splurges allowed. I don't think we have any serious plans to see any shows cuz they're SO expensive in Vegas , although one of my friends is really interested in "the Thunder From Down Under"!

Unless things have changed in the last year, the club at The Palms hotel is the happening spot. The clubs in the Bellagio (Light, I think), the Luxor, the Rio and MGM are also popular.

The Bellagio and Venetian have pretty decent art exhibits. The interiors of these hotels are must sees themselves. Check out the lobbies of both.

For a cheap thrill, go to the top of the Stratosphere and ride the big shot or the roller coaster.

If you have a car, are sober enough, and the weather is cool enough go out to Red Rocks Canyon. It is quite awesome to hike around in.

Maybe you and your friends will be lucky enough to hook up with somebody who has a boat and can go out to Lake Mead.

My cheap Vegas tips:
*If you have a couple of hours to spare, go on a time-share tour. You'll get free tickets to a not-so-popular show, but it will probably be a lot of fun. The time-share tours are in lobbies of hotels. I got to see Follies that way.

*Get funbooks from each hotel you visit for coupons for free hot dogs, popcorn, pretzels and other snacks to tide you over between filling up at buffets. You can also get free cheesy souveniers with funbooks.

*Take whatever coupons people hand to you for 2-for-1 deals on buffets and drinks.

*Even if you sit at the nickel slots, waitresses will still come by to bring you complimentary drinks. Tip when they take your order and they'll come back right away

*Drink lots and lots of water - Vegas in August is brutally hot and dry

Thanks guys!

We're actually staying at the Bellagio, hence my almost non-existent budget -- we decided to splurge cuz it's our only chance to go there together since one's getting married and we'll all be living far apart for a good long while, if not permanently. Disgustingly extravagant, I know, but we couldn't resist, esp. after seeing Ocean's Eleven. Plus we got a pretty good package deal since we're going mid-week.

Drew, by the club at the Palms -- that's the one called Rain, right? Alas, we're going Sun-Wed, so I don't think it's open then. Light's open on Sundays, and I'll have to check out when the others are open -- I forgot that clubs might not be open during the week.

No car for us, so the canyon will have to be a miss. But perhaps that should be saved for sometime other than August. Lake Mead might be missed too -- but if an opportunity presents itself, I wouldn't complain!

Fernando, I will look into the time-share tour thing. I've never heard of those before. Do you go around and look at other people's timeshares? [confused] And I'm all about the coupons and free stuff!! Do hotels usually have the funbooks in the lobbies?

Check out:

Cheapo Vegas

As for the funbooks, I think you have to ask the information desk for them. (don't recall seeing them in the lobbies)

I went last year in August, and yeah, it was damn hot. But it's not too bad as it's dry heat. Just hide inside the casinos in the day time and emerge when it's cooler at night

And I think the monorail is finally open.

Yes, the monorail is open. No, August is not necessarily a dry heat month. "Monsoonal" storms flow up from the South.

I think the clubs might only be dark err closed on Mondays. If you are a beer snob the NYNY (easily accessable via a monorail link to the Bellagio) has a very nice microbrewery that (I think) has live music and no cover most nights. I've always had a good time there.

I think you have to ask for the funbooks at the information desk at the hotel.
I'm pretty sure the Riviera has a timeshare booth.
What they do is pick you up in a mini-bus, take you to a timeshare condo, walk you around the model unit, and then put the hard sell on you.

Great link, apyf! That will definitely come in handy for restaurant comparing.

With the funbooks, does each casino chain/corporation issue one for all their properties, or do individual casinos each have different ones?

Also, do the casinos tend to have their air conditioning set at subzero levels? I work at one here in the coffee/giftshop as my summer job (only two weeks left! ), and all I ever hear about is how cold it is in the actual casino -- people actually come in to buy jackets and sweatshirts cuz they can't stand it!

Drewmeister is right.. I remember the week before I went, there was a massive storm that flooded parts of Vegas.
Having said that, I don't think the heat is that bad, but then again, I endure 3 months of daily 35+ Celcius temperatures, 100% humdity & no AC in Hong Kong.. so the heat in Vegas was mild in comparison. Just bring a hat, sunscreen and avoid being out in the sun too long.

The AC was pretty normal, I think they want the gamblers as comfy as possible.

so lucky, staying at the Bellagio. Here is my buffet tip. My husband and I stayed for 6 days once (in summer, and yes it is Horribly Hot)and most days we did a late breakfast buffet (I like Paris best) and then go in to the lunch buffet about 30 minutes before it switches to dinner (like 4:30 or so). It's about ten bucks cheaper and they bring out the dinner food soon after you get there (ie crab legs etc). You can stay as long as you want. My favorite lunch/dinner buffet was Bellagio, and second was Paris. And I normally hate buffets. These are not you Ponderosa type places though.
Enjoy!!!
The Auston Powers nickel slots are particularly fun.

Ok, so I'm going to Vegas in March. We're staying a big off the strip, but not too far away. So far the advice here sounds good.

Anyone else have some tips?

I like Vegas it's funny in a Disneyland for adults smarmy-sinful kind of way.

Most things are horrifically expensive there, so if you want to save some cash on things like non-alcholic bevvies, bring a cooler for your room and stock up at the 7-11. It's also a good way to get prelubed for a night of drinking because sometimes it takes a while before the free drinks start coming. The free drinks aren't all that free because you still have to tip the waitress if you want her to come back.

Cabs are one of the few things that are relatively inexpensive. Because there really isn't anywhere to park, unless you're planning a trip to red rocks, or to the dam, I'd skip the rental car and reallocate those funds to taxi fares.

Tmac has great buffet info, but you're still looking at a cost of about $15 per person last time I checked.

Overall Paris is my favorite casino. It's a little smaller, but they have a great creperie there. I also had a wonderful experience in the back bar when it wasn't busy. The bored bartender gave Spud and me a free vodka tasting of high end vodkas. We tipped him well.

I love the roller coaster on top of NYNY, but it's expensive. NYNY also has a pretty decent microbrewery in the basement.

They have a TKTS booth there for half price tickets, but honestly, the shows you want to see are all the Cirque du Soleil ones and those are never at the TKTS booth. TKTS does have a website though, so you can look before you go.
