The other place I was thinking of is the Pacific Terrace Hotel, in between the Crystal Pier and the Capri. It is only 3 stories and is in a quiet area (on a bluff above the beach). The pool area was just refurbished within the last year or so and looks great. http://www.pacificterrace.com/

The Dana Landing resort is at least a mile each way to the beach, and the beach there is very crowded by beer swilling crowds on the weekends.

Thanks for all the helpful input, Drew.
It's really good that I am sifting through all this now.
Unfortunately, the Pacific Terrace (looked really nice) has a 7 night minimum for that time of year. I considered going ahead and doing the week, and typed in in. $6K per week (quoted for July '05) is too pricey for us.
It does look like the Capri (Pacific Beach, right?) is condos but if affordable that would be fine, the area looks great. Am having a bit of trouble getting some solid info (rates, what the condos look like) but will keep trying.
The Bahia looks nice--and we could afford it. But the Capri intrigues me more.
It's too bad we are going at high season, but I don't see that changing.

Thanks Taco
I did check out craigslist back when I first started searching, and what I saw was weekly rentals that were pretty pricey. But it would probably be good to keep perusing, and maybe contact someone personally. I like craigslist.

$850 per night? Are you kiddin' me? Man that is outrageous, but I guess when 1/2 of Arizona is there, the prices are up. For 1/2 the money you'd be better off in a condo like this: http://www.vrbo.com/50153. Except for July 4th the bayside is really mellow.

There is also a place that rents furnished apartments on Crown Point. It isn't on the water, but close and I'm sure it is a lot less expensive.

Do you have to be at the beach? How about Mission Valley? Or Encinitas, Cardiff, Solana Beach, etc.

Solana Beach, etc.

I remember a cousin mentioning Encinitas.
Would this area get us in trouble with the Del Mar Racetrack traffic situation?
If there is a nice pool, we do not have to be right on the beach. My bros and I love the beach but are realistic, we basically just love the water (and we are not millionaires.) The rest of the family are already in CA or Hawaii and don't care.
Thanks for the bayside suggestion. Private parking appeals, as well.
Appreciate the help and advice!

Drew
I am still figuring out the geography.
San Diego is so spread out.
What about The Holiday Inn Bayside? There are several Holiday Inns, but this one looks like a good location with an airport shuttle, etc (though we will probably rent a car anyway).
However we are also interested in the Catamaran, more expensive but some nice touches.

Right beside the Interstate and shopping mall, and only 45 minutes from the beach..(by car)

I know the place and area quite well. I occasionally work in a building across the street. It may be on the bay, but it is in a commercial definitely not suitable for swimming. You'd probably get sick from the water. It is a very convenient location, though (easy walk to trolley stop a few blocks away and close to everything downtown. Everything is an easy drive as well- It is very easy to get to I5 via grape street. It is also close to the gaslamp quarter and at least 3 concert venues (4th and B, Casbah, and opening next month the House of Blues).

There is a place on Crown Point that rents fully furnished apartments. It used to be called the Oakwoods, but I think it changed its name. I'll try and track it down. It might be a good option as well.

El Kabong in the summer time is no picnic. Triple digits are not uncommon. When I was a kid I remember it getting up to 112 occasionally. There are a few dive bars you might enjoy though.

Thanks Drew.
My aunt likes the Catamaran better. It isn't cheap but it looks nice and if we can get all of us in one room (one king, two doubles) it would not be bad at all for high season.
If you can find info about Crown Point that would be great.

The place was known as the Oakwoods, but it changed ownership. I'll work on a number.

The Cat is a really nice place, but I thought you got some negative recs? I had my wedding reception there (12 years ago) and I ride my bike by there a lot. A buddy plays volleyball directly south (30 yards) of the place. It is on a really quiet, mellow place on the bay (with the exception of July 4th, then the entire bay is a raging party).

A couple other thoughts? What is your budget? There are some motels North of Crystal pier or stay on crystal pier itself(www.crystalpier.com). Coming from a landlocked state, it might be fun to stay in a cottage on the pier. I know people who have stayed there and really liked it...as long as you like the sound of the ocean!

Drew, those cottages look absolutely charming! I think all the kids (probably ours included, even though they are big now) would prefer the Cat with all its amenities, but let me see the price difference and then we'll see.
The negative stuff I read about the Catamaran was the service. It's not enough to scare me away. And there is a nice pool there, and parrots and stuff, right?

I'm really torn now!
In looking at Frommer's and a couple other places, the rates at the Crystal Pier are more than the Catamaran: $195 to 320 for a double vs the Cat's $275 (after taxes and parking) for a room that sleeps 4. However with the Crystal Pier you get a fully equipped kitchen. And the views...the mellow atmosphere...The Cat with its Tiki atmosphere and amenities would fit our reunion needs very well indeed.
But the Crystal Pier looks *exactly* like our kind of place; I'm just not sure about the rest of our crew.
