SoCal Reunion--help please
replied on: 4/27/2005 11:28:35 PM Dang, this reminds me of a conversation I had with my parents over the weekend. You've got to break things down to the base elements and plan accordingly. What kind of area do you really want to stay in? Do you want to be close to downtown action? At the beach? On the bay? Those cottages on crystal pier would be pretty cool. There is a hotel opening in a couple of months a block north of crystal pier. It should be great. I'll let you know when I track down its namde as well. That Shelter Pointe place is interesting. Their website claims that it is 5 minutes from Sea World...Yeah right, only if you helicopter in with a low altitude opening. Shelter Island has a few places and is close to Point Loma (my turf), but is a bit further away from everything as compared to the Holiday Inn previously discussed. Humphreys resort on shelter island has very good bands all summer long. |

replied on: 4/28/2005 7:07:37 AM quote: Yes, this is the kind of stuff that someone such as myself has no clue about. quote: Now this might be a plus. quote: As I understand it, the Catamaran is on the bay, but close to the beach? This appeals. As does the pool. Plus the Cat is close to the action, correct? For the four of us, all this works. Achieving a consensus is another thing altogether, but we have time. When it opens and you have time, let me know about that other new hotel at Crystal Pier. I think those CP cottages are absolutely charming but we need more amenities. For the three days, I'd rather be in a pool watching the tiki torches getting lit than cooking dinner in a kitchenette. Priorities, you know. |

replied on: 4/28/2005 10:17:43 AM The Cat is right on the bay on the Northwest corner (Sail Bay). It is a very short walk to the beach...but the closest beach is white trash city (I should send you a picture of the amosphere there, which is kind of typical where there is parking right off the beach in both Pacific and Mission Beaches). It would be better to go a few blocks north or south of the closest beach (right where Pacific Beach Drive meets the beach). Yes, there is a lot of stuff in the immediate area if you don't mind a little walking (bars, restaurants, shops, etc.). There is even a decent brewpub close by. On the weekends traffic can be very bad. |

replied on: 7/20/2005 3:13:05 PM So my aunt and uncle did some research: they went to Coronado, Mission Bay, Pacific Beach, La Jolla and Carlsbad. The looked at a lot of places, considering a pleasant atmosphere, availability and affordability. They settled on Carlsbad. One place was especially nice but did not have enough rooms. So this is the place they recommend: Carlsbad Inn The group rate is $194 a night and we can get a room with two queens. (Boys won't be thrilled but they'll deal.) |

replied on: 7/20/2005 3:50:42 PM It is supposed to be a nice place, if I'm thinking of the correct place. The beaches in the area (as long as there is enough sand) are excellent). The web page says that Fidel's restaurant is at the same location. A lot of people rank it among the best Mexican place in San Diego. I ate there a few months ago, and it was pretty good. Close by is a really good Pizza-Brew pub (Pizza Port). It has excellent beer and pizza. Some of the best of both anywhere. Both of the above are usually packed. You can walk to the train (coaster) stop as well, which would be convenient if you want to go to downtown San Diego and not have to drive (and park). Carlsbad also has a pretty decent nightclub (Nieman's). |

replied on: 7/20/2005 5:13:11 PM Ooh, thanks for the info, Drew. The young adult set will appreciate the nightclub info, we all appreciate the other stuff, esp the Mexican restaurant. I love going out for Mexican food with my California relations. We await input from the rest of the family, but I think they'll go along with the choice. It will be almost a year from today that the reunion takes place. But it will be a busy year for my own family and I am glad we are getting this figured out. |

replied on: 7/20/2005 5:22:17 PM You are very welcome. Let me know if you need or are curious about anything else. North County Coastal isn't my home turf, but I'm up there periodically biking and whatnot. The Carlsbad village is nice and mellow. It would be a good place for a mellow vacation with other distractions/activities close by. Bear in mind that it is pretty rare to have sunshine all day at the beach. Night and morning low clouds aka the marine layer are the rule. "Relations"? I didn't know it was going to be THAT kind of reunion! |

replied on: 7/20/2005 5:45:07 PM quote: Duly noted. Actually I kind of remember this from the last time I was there for a wedding. It's certainly a different climate from what we have here--and I am very much looking forward to it. quote: heh Yeah saying 'relations' instead of relatives is a little goofy. Reminds me of the Winnie-the-Pooh books and Rabbit's umpteen Friends and Relations. |
