Eventually I'll have more specific info, but for now I need to know whether I'll need a rental car to get around (so I know to request the $$ in advance) or whether pub trans is good enough for the seattle area. The conference is in the hotel where I'll be staying, the Renaissance Seattle Hotel (Hulk will be there too, but he'll be getting to have all the fun while I'm at the conference) and I/he/we will be wanting to do some touristy stuff and all that when I'm not conferencing. Do I need a rental car? Would it be better than not, like in LA? Or would it be a pain to have one, like it would be in NYC or SF or Boston? What's the cab situation like? I'll be reimburse for those too, so it would be nice to know about that sort of thing. |

replied on: 6/23/2005 2:20:06 PM Coming to Seattle!! Cool! I do think a car is always nice in Seattle. In the downtown area you're fine without one, but if you want to venture out (Lake Washington, U-District, Fremont, Ballard, Wallingford) the buses are annoying as hell. There is a bus pick-up right at the airport that will take you downtown--so if you plan to stay in that area, the no-car option is fine. Let's meet for dinner or drinks while you're in town! I've always wanted to meet you two. ![]() P.S. I'm changing my name to Mädchen now. I've always liked that name! |

replied on: 8/4/2005 2:09:43 PM OK, hotel is booked for the conference, and I'll have a car for the whole week. Now, where can we stay for Sunday/Monday night (after the conference is over) that is affordable? It doesn't have to be downtown, since we'll have the car, but it would be nice to not have to drive everywhere. Any ideas? Maybe I'll google and see if there is an HI in Seattle? |

replied on: 8/4/2005 3:16:22 PM There's a good HI in Seattle. Good kitchen, giant common room, pretty sociable. Dorms OK, but not sure if they allow mixed dorms. I was in a dorm with a weird guy who handed out religious leaflets. He came and went at weird times, and he snored horribly, but snoring was drowned by the noise (not unpleasant, but continuous) of the elevated freeway. Given that does not happen to you, I recommend it It's central, and I'm not sure about parking. There's a Green Tortoise hostel which is a bit sketchy (eg breakfast is included but there wasn't any one morning). |

replied on: 8/5/2005 12:01:28 AM The Green Tortoise (I think that's what it's called) in Seattle was quite nice actually...and they offer overnight parking with a parkade just up the street. However, there is a hotel directly across the street (it's white) that is supposed to be nice and very affordable and for the location it's a helluva good deal in my opinion. Can't recall the name of it, but I'll try to remember and post later...unless Madchen knows what I'm talking about. With two of you travelling, it might be just as affordable to stay there. It's a block away from the public market and you can easily walk around Downtown. The Experience Music Project is supposed to be very interesting, I didn't have time to visit as I was only in Seattle overnight.....Mads I feel so dumb, I forgot all about you being in Seattle, we could have met for a bevy...how sad. |

replied on: 8/16/2005 4:20:32 PM Sailor said she encountered crackheads at the Green Tortoise--be careful. I walked past the HI though near Pike Place and it looked good. No weirdos hanging about. |
