replied on: 8/29/2005 11:47:45 PM The Zona Rosa is an area with a lot of restaurants where both locals and tourists go. It definitely has plenty of tourist traffic, what with its open-air shopping mall with McDonald's and all. That doesn't mean that there isn't a great antique store or souvenir "mall" just around the corner with great prices, I'm just warning you. The Paseo de la Reforma is a beautiful boulevard with great sculpture along it. Double-decker bus tours go along it, and I think I should have done one of those. Zona Rosa is between downtown and the huge park that holds several museums and the zoo. (I think ZR is west of downtown and east of the park) I don't know the zone well enough to say if it's at the border with another, sketchier area, but it doesn't look like it. If anything, the hostel might be at the border of a neighborhood I mention below (Condesa) I don't know anything about the hostel, but it looks neat. When I was in Mexico City about 2 years ago, some of my coworkers really came to love the area called Condesa. It might be nice to stay in a less-tourist neighborhood, if there are good-looking hostels there too. Frommer's says: "Condesa & Roma With their new moniker "the SoHo of Mexico City," these side-by-side bohemian neighborhoods, located just south of the Zona Rosa, are home to the current hip clubs and hot spots, from cutting-edge restaurants to offbeat shops, art galleries, and cafes. The neighborhoods are also known for their restored Art Deco buildings." I went there once, and loved the artsy shops and the restaurant where we ate. So, are you planning a trip? When? Why DF, in particular? It is a challenging city, and depending on what you want to do, maybe another spot would be better. These maps seem pretty useful: http://www.allaboutmexicocity.com/areamaps.htm |

replied on: 8/30/2005 9:55:19 AM Zona Rosa/Condesa/Roma is relatively new, as a lot of it had to be rebuilt after the '85 Earthquake. Roma was one of the areas of the city that was badly hit. Condesa is really cute with a ton of cafes, restaurants and the like. The location is not bad either... I hate saying this, Maddie, but I would avoid any downtown hotels/hostels. Not very safe, especially if you want to go out for drinkies and are coming back somewhat late. The Zocalo area is completely different from Guadalajara's downtown Tapatia plaza/Garibaldi square area. The hostel you chose seems quite cute. If you want another option check out http://www.elcenoteazul.com - looks good, and very close to Coyoacan and San Angel in the south part of the city. I think you'll absoulutely love San Angel - please don't miss Bazar del Sabado! Keep in mind that the periferico (expressway) is under construction, so traffic will suck. DF is a challenging city, but you've done GDL before. You'll do great. e-mail me if you need to know anything else! |

replied on: 8/30/2005 11:40:08 AM Wendy, I think you lucked out. My mum and I were going to go to a Rob Lichtenstein exhibit at Bellas Artes, and it was canceled due to over 16 "bandas" working the zocalo area. This is par for the course in DF. Keeping your wits about you is all well and good, but I would NOT walk around ANYWHERE in DF by myself at night, especially if you stand out as a tourist. Again, I hate talking like this. This isn't like the "pickpocket" threads in ET. No one should be dissuaded from going to DF, it is absolutely gorgeous. But you cannot gloss over the fact that it is not a safe city, and this should always be kept in mind. |

replied on: 8/30/2005 11:45:14 AM I agree with Petite about seeing the Saturday market in San Angel/Coyoacan, (bring money and suitcase space for affordable fine art!) and I loved the Frida Kahlo house. But as for staying there, it is a pretty long trip from the other sights of the city. Getting there by train took two changes for me, with a surprisingly long wait. (I lived just northwest of the Zona Rosa) Other times I took a taxi or the bus. Depending on the traffic, that was sometimes better, sometimes worse than the subway changes. |
