New York City Info Needed

There is an art exhibit at The Metropolitan Museum featuring Vincent Van Gogh that Mini Blu would die to see and we are thinking about trying to go either Nov. 19 through November 23 or right after Christmas.
This would be a budget trip for sure.

Any suggestion as to where to stay in the city that are close at hand that are safe but CHEAP?

How far are the airports and how expensive is it to get into the city by cab, train or bus from the airports?

Any suggestions of must see places? I know all the usual tourist ideas just wondering if there are any I may not think of.

Any other info thoughts or warnings are welcome. Please!

How many people are going? Which airport?

I think the set cab rate is $40 + toll to anywhere in Manhattan. Shuttle is around $21 round trip each person. Go to the airport's web site, it lists the ground transportation option.

You can also take the train or subway to JFK.

I have taken shuttle, train, subway options.

NYC hotels are really expensive, that's why I say use priceline. With a few people sharing, it's cheaper than a hostel. I stayed at the Hilton in Midtown(4 star) for $110/night, had a big corner room with 2 queen size beds. I think my brother got 3 star hotels near Time Square for $75 before.

Sounds like Mini Blu is a art fan, check out The Frick Collection. Of course there is also MoMA (new building), Guggenheim, the Cloisters. What else are you interested in seeing?

No warnings needed, NYC is very safe. I wouldn't stay near Time Square because it's really noisy & crowded all the time. Midtown is really dead on weekends & at night, but perfectly safe.

Check out this old thread on NYC travel.

I've stayed in the city a few times. I once stayed at the Jazz on the Park Hostel on the Upper West Side. It was okay, a bit noisy (the building, not the people). That was probably 4 years ago, though. I also stayed at Hotel 31, which was reasonably priced and conveniently located, though not as close to your target area. I also stayed at a Holiday Inn Express in Queens for a reasonable rate. It's several blocks to the train, but they have free parking and that is what we were interested in at the time!

I would second checking out the Frick Collection; it is one of my favorite NYC experiences. The Lower Eastside Tenement Museum is also pretty interesting (and it's a National Trust site!).

My last trip I got a Big Apple Greeter who was very friendly and showed my cousin and me around lower Manhattan.

Dramaddict had this thread, a good long list of things to see.

The Frick collection one of my fave too, I finally got around to seeing it on my 5th trip to NYC, and thought to myself, why didn't I come before? In every room, I was thinking, so THIS is where this <insert name of a very important piece of art> is.

I am in NYC next week, hope to get a chance to FINALLY check out the Tenement Museum. Already have tickets to the opera on Thursday.

Thank you for the help. Were not sure we'll go yet but would really like to. She does not know it may be an option yet as I don't wasnt to dissappoint her if we are unable to go.
It would most likely just be 3 of us going.

The husband and I have been several times before but that was probably about 17 years ago at least.

Thanks again.
