Uk Traveler backpacking around North East USA
replied on: 11/13/2005 3:59:16 AM My flights are now booked and after weeks of change I think I know my route I'm taking. When I first started this message a good few weeks ago my initial idea was to travel in the North East of the states. Though thanks to all advice given It's decided to go Coast to Coast. Arrive 24th December 4 nights New York 2 nights Washington DC 4 nights Hugo (Next to Denver) 2 nights Las Vegas 4 nights L.A Leave 9 January I fly into New York JFK, arriving at 6.30pm on Christmas Eve. First thing I wanna see is the Big Christmas Tree which is on the film Home Alone... Ha. I think I'm staying in Greenwich Village, Lower Manhatton. I'm giving Boston a miss so will be in New York for 4 nights then getting the train down to Washiongton DC on the 28 Dec, where I'm spending 2 nights. So really I have just 1 full day in Washington to see as many sites as poss. White House, The Mall, etc. From there I'm flying in to Denver where I'm staying at a town called Hugo, as I have family there who I'm staying with for the New Year. I wasn't aware I had family in the states though it turns out my Dads cousin does. So thats 4 nights there then off to the lights of Las Vegas, where I am spending 2 nights. With it being mid week and after the Christmas period I am able to get a 2 night stay in a very posh looking hotel for under $50. I guess they think I'm going to spend all my money in their Casinos... We'll see. I might get hooked, loose all my money and not beble to afford the final stage of my trip and get myself stuck in Vegas forever... Ha Ha From there I'm flying to L.A where I have 4 nights there then fly home from L.A on the 9 Jan. It had been a choice of seeing either L.A or San Francisco though it was cheaper to go to L.A both, internal flights and the flight to take me home back to England. Plus, If I coming to the States, I have to go home with a picture of the Hollywood Sign... I hope my trip is going to be as exciting as what it has been planning it, which I'm sure it will. Thanks to everyone who has gave me advice as it has helped more than yous would know, as I have more or less based my full trip on it. I'm open to any advice that would help me fill in my days when I'm at these certain places, plus another question I'm after is THE WEATHER..... Will it be snowing in New York, Sunny In L.A..... I'm just not sure..... |

replied on: 11/13/2005 7:08:01 AM John That is an interesting taste of the States you'll be getting. Wow, coast to coast. Hugo is a good hour and a half drive from Denver, and a very small town. Will you have any time in Denver? Is someone coming to pick you up at the Denver airport? There are buses which can take you near Hugo, but not all the way. The weather there could be warm and sunny or cold and snowy, you just never know with Colorado. It will probably be cool to cold in NY, and quite nice in Vegas and LA. Have a wonderful trip, and please keep in touch as you journey through the USA. |

replied on: 11/13/2005 11:52:55 AM New York could go anywhere from big snows and freezing weather to 18C highs with sunshine, you just can't predict ahead of time. Watch the weather forecasts online right before you go. Hey West Coasters, is LA predictably warm in December/January? Your best bet clothing-wise will probably be the always popular "many thin layers." |

replied on: 11/13/2005 5:47:27 PM Can't speak for LA, but being here in Northern California (where it's always colder than LA), I don't think I have seen it fall below 16 C in the day time for the last 5 winters. Night is a bit cooler. Unless you go up to the mountains, where it could be snowing. i.e. I could be here in Santa Clara valley wearing short sleeves and see the mountains snow capped. If you haven't book your hostels/hotel & plane tickets for in the US, do it ASAP. |

replied on: 11/14/2005 11:56:28 AM Yeah I have got a lift sorted from Denver to Hugo. I may spend a day in Denver as I might find 4 days in Hugo is a bit much if it is only a small town..... |

replied on: 11/20/2005 1:13:13 PM I'm back..... Does anyone know if anything is open on Christmas day in New York? Ie, the shops, transport etc. I know back home most things are closed, though with it being New York, the City that never sleeps it may be different. I still have no idea on what to do on Christmas day. I will certainly miss my Christmas Dinner...... Question on Vegas and the casinos..... Is there a dress code what I need to go by or would casual jeans, jumper and trainers be fine??? |

replied on: 11/21/2005 1:58:34 AM NYC Public transportation would be open, but on holiday schedule. Most shops, tourist attractions are closed. Some restaurants serving Christmas dinner would be open, but most are pretty expensive and you need reservations. I bet some of the diners would be open too. If you can't find anything open, try heading to Chinatown, it should be open. No real dress code in the casinos. What you have would be fine. |

replied on: 11/21/2005 11:49:38 PM Xmas day may be a big one for walking around taking photos--more of buildings than people, I would guess. You could find some walking tours in guidebooks or online, and be drawn to interesting things outside. I hope it won't be too cold! Also, I found this on a Jewish site: "It's tough to find something to do on Christmas, because just about everything is closed. Here are a few of the more popular December 25 activities for Jews. Go out for Chinese food Many Jews go out for Chinese food on Christmas. The Chinese do not celebrate Christmas any more than we do, so most Chinese restaurants are open on Christmas. In Philadelphia and New York, there are several kosher-certified Chinese restaurants to choose from, so that even the most observant Jew can eat Chinese on Christmas. Go to the Matzah Ball In some cities, Jewish singles organizations sponsor "Matzah Balls," Jewish singles dances, on Christmas Eve or Christmas night. Go to a movie Many movie theaters are open on Christmas day, particularly in the afternoon (after 4PM). In fact, in 1998, a friend and I went to see The Prince of Egypt in a local theater on the afternoon of Christmas day." Actually, there are plenty of Chinese who are christians, but it is pretty typical for Chinese places to be open on Christmas. New York's Chinatown is pretty interesting. If Pearl River Trading (or something close to that) is open, I could spend a couple of hours browsing though there. I think it's on Canal street. The Museum of Jewish Heritage seems to be open on Xmas. Have you lined up your lodging yet? Hostels in NY might have a good idea of what there is to do open on that day. And maybe some hostel will be doing some group dinner--I'd go with a place like that! By the way, do you want advice on which museums to choose, since you won't have a lot of time in your cities? What's your favorite type of museum/art, so I can give you some ideas. Or toss out some museum possibilities and we'll rate them. |

replied on: 11/23/2005 12:46:02 PM Los Angeles apparently gets some sort of a "rainy" season (i.e. two weeks, which makes it an official season here or something) in late December/January. I would pack a fleece and stuff you can layer (tshirts and sweaters) or something. You don't need a heavy coat. Right now it's still warm and sunny. Vegas is warm and sunny during the day but the temperature drops much faster at night than it does in L.A. The dress code in casinos can vary by what area of the casino you're in and the quality of the casino (i.e. Bellagio vs. Circus Circus). Just go with nice-ish casual and good personal grooming and you'll be fine. Not to be stereotypical but I think your british accent might make up for sneakers should the question arise. Just kidding |
