I understand that there's a rainforest there. Is it true that it's illegal to go to the rainforest without a guide? How do I get a local guide? Is there a good place to find one? Can anyone recommend a nice secluded beach? What local dishes are there? Most importantly, the only guide book I can find is Footprints. Has anyone used them before? I'm a Lonely Planet kind of girl, but I'd like something island specific. What book did you use? |

replied on: 1/28/2006 2:45:10 PM St. Lucia is part of the US Virgin islands. I think it was Chucktel who went there a year or two ago, but I might be confused about that. Most info will be found in guide that covers all the virgin islands. |

St Lucia
replied on: 2/20/2006 3:48:38 PM There isn't a good book, so I'm going to write one and try and keep this updated The Basics St Lucia Tourist Board Language English but many locals speak a local patois heavily infused with French. Currency Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC) but US dollars are widely accepted. Electricity 220 volts using the English 3 pin plug Time Atlantic Standard Time. One hour ahead of EST and four hours behind GMT Transport Remember that they drive on the left Taxi drivers are also trained as tourits guides and are priced accordingly. Always establish the price before you leave. Mini Vans act as busses which are every where and can be hailed down. If you want to avoid the taxis at the airport you have have to walk about a 1/2 mile to the main road to get the local bus which is always a mini van. They will take USD but keep the exchange rate in mind. Money There aren't any ATMs at the airport but there are several in the Gros Islet/Rodney Bay area. In my opinion it's always best to use the local currency (Eastern Caribbean Dollar) but everyone is happy to take USD. The downside to using USD is that your almost definitely asssured to be overcharged. Things to Do Article aerial tramway that will give visitors a tour of St. Lucia's mountains and rainforest should be up and running by early March 2006 Edmonds National Forest offers good hiking trails. Outside of town are warm mineral springs called "Jerusalem Warm Waters" which is quiet and local. Rainforest There's a local group that manages Gros Piton as a preserve/park. Go to the Ranger station at the base of the Mtn and pay a $25 USD fee which includes a guide and the proceeds pay for maintaining the trail. Gros Piton has 2 summits. Your guide takes you to both. There are also *tons* of organised tours that go into the rainforest that include lunch, drinks etc but you're looking at paying in excess of GBP £70 |
