Illegials in the US (now up to 12 million)
replied on: 3/8/2006 12:56:46 AM Honestly, I think what we're seeing the result of a global undervaluation of the cost of labor. If there wasn't such a pressing need for capital in other countries, I don't think we'd see the same level of illegal immigration. The need is greatest in the developing world, but even in Canada the cost to Buy a decent living outstrips the Sell value of most people's labor. Because of the tiered system of economies, there will always be hungrier people willing to take a little less money, fewer benefits, or risk more danger just to get paid. That drives the price of labor down. It doesn't affect the other costs of doing business and in a buy-sell system, there is no real incentive to reduce prices to compensate for the lower price of labor. The American Economy is Mature and is using stupid short term fixes that prolong the problems without solving them. We haven't made any major infrastructure investments in about 50 years, maybe more in some sectors. Our only real investment vehicle is the military, but that's not conducive to long term economic growth in an age where information has more value than manpower. I contemplated what would happen if we murdered our sick, elderly and poor, but I don't think that even that could fix our current system. |

replied on: 3/8/2006 10:05:04 AM I wish Arlen Specter luck with his bill. I don't think he'll make anyone completely happy, but maybe that's the point. I don't have a lot of experience with illegal immigrants here since this area has lagged behind the rest of the country in immigration generally, both legal and illegal; thus, the kinds of tensions and problems I read about occurring in border states don't exist. I'm curious - what do you folks in CA think is the answer to dealing with the folks who are already here and stopping the influx? |
