Woohoo! It worked!!

And just for clarity, the prices were ones I looked up at the end of March 2003 for midweek August 2003. And none of them include the 12-13% city hotel taxes, either.

I was looking for a room for my mom and I, so I was looking for the cheapest 2-bed deal that wasn't scary. So all these hotels should have different bed options available--they just weren't my priority at the time.

For the record, we'll be staying at the Skyline Hotel, so I'll post a review to say how it was.

And if any of my abbreviations don't make sense, just let me know!

Wow, that's great information!

I've stayed here so I'll add my info:

Hotel Name: Holiday Inn Express
Stars:
Price/night--site: $106.80--Orbitz
Beds: 2 Q
Parking: Yes; free; secure but bad directions for finding the place
Bath: private
Neighborhood: Queens/Midtown Tunnel
Reviews? Enjoyed the stay, but it was cramped sharing the room with three others
Fun Factor: The walk from the train late at night to the hotel was...interesting

Missing from the list (I'll be staying there in June):

Hotel Name: Hotel 31
Stars:
Price/night--site: $65-85 www.hotel31.com
Beds: vary
Parking?
Bath: shared or private
Neighborhood: Murray Hill
Reviews: good/mixed
Fun Factor?

I once got a really great deal on a room at The Plaza Hotel at Central Park South on Expedia

It was still a bit spendy but it worked out at about half the daily rate over 5 nights and we got a room with a really great view of the park

I think it was about $12 for a drink in the Oak Room bar though

Don't think I could afford to stay there now but I'm glad I did it once for the experience

I've stayed at the Milford Plaza a couple of times over the years as well, just around the corner from Times Square

I found it a little bit gloomy and claustrophobic but maybe it's changed since, this was a about 10/12 years ago

I have never actually been inside any of the hotels on this list. The one I have heard good things about from people who have stayed there is the Best Western President. You might be able to find some reasonably priced, nothing special but clean rooms and fine to stay in neighborhoods at www.applecorehotels.com. They have a Quality Hotel and some others like that. I placed some out of town staff at one of them a few years ago. You may also be able to find some specials on nicer hotels at www.nyc.com.

Priceline, yo. I paid about $75/night at the Rockerfeller Center Hilton during Thanksgiving.
Of course, this was in 2001, tourism was a little lacking in NYC at the time.

I just got back from staying at Hotel 31 yesterday. I stayed in a room with private bath, one double bed and one twin bed for $85/night. I was told upon checking out that the price for that room was now $100/night, so I lucked out in reserving ahead.

The room was clean, though some of the linens were stained--nothing too bad. There was a nice-sized TV with lots of cable channels. Air conditioning (window unit). We weren't given enough linens (one washcloth for two people) and the shower pressure wasn't very good and the temperature was hard to regulate. Other than that, it was fine.

The area is nice and fairly quiet, not far from the 33 St. subway station (maybe a 2-5 minute walk). The hotel is located in a historic building with lots of the historic character in tact--original wood doors and moldings, and antique elevator (slow at times, but functional).

They also provided storage for our bags after check-out. Overall, I was very pleased with it and would recommend it to any budget-minded traveler. They also have rooms available for less money with shared bathrooms.
