The reason I wrote this guide is because I decided it was a bit weird finding that so many people had downloaded Bid For Power, and yet, barely anyone played this game online…so in an effort to revive a dying mod, I have written a guide to help get new players started. I didn’t bother going through the basic stuff like video and sound settings, however, I’ve gone through more of the useful things that newbies tend to ask when playing the game…so try not to get too bored :-P. Basic Controls: I recommend using the default controls with a few alterations so that you can have more control over your character, here is the set of controls that I use: W = Forwards S = Backwards A = Sidestep Left D = Sidestep Right F = Fly C = Crouch* Ctrl = Block Caps Lock = Recharge Ki Shift = Use Ki Alt = Toggle Ki Space = Jump* Tab = Show Scores Left Mouse = Fire Right Mouse = Melee Middle Mouse = Zoom View *note: while flying jump and crouch will cause you to descend/ascend Basic Moves: Teleport: This can be achieved by double tapping either A or D…this has to be done fairly quickly. To many this may seem a useless move since it doesn’t move you that far, however there is no point where you can’t teleport, this move has no delay, you can teleport continuously provided you smash the A or D key fast enough…this move will also get you out of melee hit stun. Melee: Holding down the right mouse button and simply aiming at your foe will result in you smacking them…however you have to be in range for it to engage and your crosshair has to be on your enemy. You can stun your enemies by holding down the shift key and melee as normal, the added power boost gives your melee the ability to stun anyone who isn’t also holding down their melee key, so bear in mind, that when you’re going to be hit by melee and you can’t stop it, hold down melee so you won’t get stunned…or you could always teleport out of the way ;-) Flying: Pressing the F key will cause your character to hover into the air, you can move up and down vertically using jump and crouch, and move around as normal with W, A, S and D along with mouse movements. If you are stunned you will fall to the ground, and if you fall far enough, you will take damage, so remember to teleport once you get hit with melee stun! Blocking: Pressing Ctrl will make your character raise his arms over his face; this means he will now block ANY attack from ANY direction, by transferring all the force to his Ki bar. However if you don’t have enough Ki, you will be stunned for 1 second. There is no way to get out of this one, you just have to wait till your stun runs out, then you’ll be able to move again…but you better charge your Ki back up first :-P Advanced Moves: This is really a bunch of stuff the better players made up, but here goes anyways: Impact Shield: After firing an impact beam (used by shilo), if block is used to detonate the beam, no damage is taken, and thus it can be fired and detonated at point blank range, using this can highly increase your chances of hurting your opponent. Tele Melee: Using multiple teleports aimed at your enemy, you can quickly reduce the amount of space between you and your opponent and strike them once you’re in range. General Tips: • Keeping your Ki levels up without stopping: generally, if you watch any of the other decent players, you should be able to pick this up pretty quickly, but I’ll try to explain anyway; while in flight, toggle the flight to ‘off’ pressing the F key, then hitting CAPS LOCK to charge ki while you’re falling towards the ground (in whatever direction you were flying), thus keeping you moving at all times. • Chatfragging: this can annoy the living hell out of people, so try not to do it. You’ll know when someone’s chatting because a little blue speech bubble will appear over their heads and they’ll stop moving. As a tip, if you find that you’re up against someone who doesn’t know what chatfragging means, then I recommend hitting the block key, then typing what you want as fast as possible before the block runs out. • How to use the console: press the “`” key (on the left hand side of 1, just above the TAB key) to bring down the console, I have described some commands below: Commands: /com_maxfps = set your maximum frames per second (Default is 85), I don't recommend raising it higher than 100 because it will become difficult to teleport. /cg_drawfps = shows your current frames per second (Default 0, change to 1 to activate) in the top right hand corner of the screen. /com_hunkmegs = sets the amount of ram that BFP uses (Default is 56), i recommend setting this at about 150, regardless of how much ram you have, this way you won't get booted from servers when someone changes model. /name (Name here) = changes your name, if you put your name in speech marks, e.g.: /name "Blah Blah" you can have spaces in your name. /password (password here) = (note that to set a password on a server you need to use /g_password) this enters the password for a server you’re entering…once again using speechmarks will allow you to use passwords containing spaces /rconpassword (password here) = allows access to the console of the server you’re in, this password has to be set within the server console.* /rcon (command line here) = allows you to enter command lines into the server from within the game, note if you give this password to any other players in your server, they can also send commands via rcon. /sv_strictauth (0 or 1) = allows (or disallows) players with invalid or duplicate CD keys to enter the same server (Default is 1 (on), turn off by using 0), e.g. if you’re playing a LAN game and all the computers are on the same CD-key. /sensitivity (number here)= changes the sensitivity of your mouse movements (Default 5), I recommend moving this slowly higher every now and then so you are able to turn faster, as this is a fast paced game and you’ll need to be able to follow your opponents. /g_speed (number here)= changes the game speed (default is 320, can be changed to ANY number), I don’t really recommend changing this, as it’s server specific, unless of course you use it for reflex training or something… /g_chargedelay (number here) = changes the amount of time before you charge ki (default is 750, but when BFP is installed, it is automatically set at 250 (I think its measured in tenth’s of a second, not sure :-S) and can be changed to any other value), e.g. it would mean you have to hold down the charge button longer before you start regenerating Ki again. /g_kiregen (number here) = changes the amount of Ki that regenerates while standing still and not using any moves and such, like flying, use Ki and Ki attacks (default is 5 and can be changed to any number desired) /g_flightcost (number here) = changes the amount of Ki used up while flying (default is 80, but when BFP is installed, it is automatically set to 50 (I think its 80 Ki per second, not sure, never timed it :-S) /g_gravity (number here) = changes the gravity of the game (default is 800, can be changed to any other value), this can effect heights of jumps, and trajectory of certain projectiles which are effected by gravity. /g_dowarmup (1 or 0) = changes whether you want the fight to begin immediately or have a delay (default is 1 (on, off is 0)) /g_warmup = changes the amount of time before the game allows you to harm your opponent (default is 2 seconds and can be changed to any number /model (Model name here) = changes your player’s model (Explained in more detail further on). /map (Map name here) = changes the map the game is played on (Explained in more detail further on). /kill = makes your character kill itself. /quit = closes BFP and leaves you at the desktop. *note: any of the above commands can be entered into the main server window (the blue one), a command entered into the main server window (the blue one) does not require a “/” before the command. Here's a screenshot of a dedicated server: ( IMAGE MISSING ) /callvote (command here) = call a vote in the server (f1 for yes (the command /vote yes can also be used), f2 for no (the command /vote no can also be used)), most admin commands can be made this way without the admin being present, e.g. /callvote map (map name here) will call a vote to change the map. Here is a list of things you can vote for (these are also commands you can run through the server): • Map_restart Map (map name here) = changes the map if majority of players vote yes. • G_gametype (number here; 0 = free for all, 1 = tournament, 3 = Survival, 4 = Monster, 5 = Team death match, 6 = Last Man Standing, 7 = Capture the flag) = changes the game type if majority of players vote yes Kick (player name here) = kicks a player provided enough people vote yes. • Clientkick (player client number here) = as above, except with the client’s number not their name (this can be useful if the annoying player keeps changing his name ;-)). • Capturelimit (number of captures here) = number of flag captures needed to win a capture the flag match. • Timelimit (number of minutes here) = changes the time limit on the game if majority of players vote yes. • Fraglimit (number of kills to win the game) = changes the number of frags needed to win a game if majority of players vote yes. • G_meleeonly (1 (on) or 0 (off), turn’s melee only on or off) = changes the game so that only melee can be used in combat if majority of players vote yes. • G_hitstun (1 (on) or 0 (off), turns melee hit stuff on or off) = changes the game so that melee hit stun doesn’t apply if majority of players vote yes. • G_allowspectatorchat (1 (on) or 0 (off), turns spectator chat on or off) = turns off spectator chat (can be useful if there is the occasional annoying spammer in the spectators) if majority of players vote yes. • G_basepl (changes base power level, 999 = max) = changes the amount of “power” you start with at the beginning of the match, 999 means 1,000,000 power level, numbers lower will change this down. Provided that majority of players vote yes. • G_noflight (1 (off) or 0 (on), turn’s flight on or off) = turns off flight while in game if majority of players vote yes. • How to host your own server: you can host your own server by simply starting a game, then typing /dedicated 1 into the console and hitting enter. The game will seem to minimise, however it simply creates a server command box (coloured blue) where you can enter commands (listed above). You can join your own server by opening BFP again and click start; you should find your own server staring you in the face ;-). If you can’t see any servers to connect to, hit the space bar, and click the “Servers” heading, keep doing this until it says “Internet” next to it, then you should be able to find other servers other than your own. If you find you can’t connect to other server’s you might want to try updating your Quake III Arena point release version to the latest one. Automatic downloading may also be something that hinders you from connecting to a server, I recommend turning this off in the BFP Options menu. You might want to try using The All-Seeing eye in order to find other BFP servers. You can download it from All Seeing Eye(Note, here is a screenshot of how the program should look when finding BFP servers: ( IMAGE MISSING ) • How to Use Additional Models/Model Packs: To use a model/model pack, simply put the model file in the bfpq3 folder, e.g. “c:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\bfpq3”. Remember that if you have a certain model, this DOES NOT mean that any other player will be able to see it. They must have the same model in order to see it. Make sure that if you use single models, to rename it to md3-(Model name here).pk3 or BFP won’t recognise it and it won’t show up in the player list. Sometimes models won’t show up in the player list because you ran out of room due to having too many models in the bfpq3 folder at once. To load your desired model you can simply use the command /model bfp(number here depending on which attackset the model uses*)-(Model name here). *note: the Attackset numbers are as follows (unless they are custom models and may require a different number): Bfp1 = Kyah’s attackset Bfp2 = Tetsedah’s attackset Bfp3 = Ryuujin’s attackset Bfp4 = Pyrate’s attackset Bfp5 = Gothax’s attackset Bfp6 = Shiilo’s attackset • How to Use Additional Maps: To use a map, just put it in the bfpq3 folder (as above). Make sure that you rename the maps to map-(Map name here).pk3 or BFP won’t recognise it and it won’t show up in the map list. Sometimes maps won’t show up in the map list, to load a map of your choice simply load a game (doesn’t matter which map) then change the map while in game using the command /map (Map name here). • How to use Coloured Names: Quite simple, while using the /name (name here) command, you can change the colours of the characters you use with a “^” (usually hold down shift and press 6), then type a number directly afterwards, from 1 – 8 along the top row of your keyboard. Once you’ve typed the number, the “^” should look like it gets deleted, from this point you only need to type whatever you like and it should take on a colour, (1 = Red, 2 = Green, 3 = Yellow, 4 = Dark Blue, 5 = Light Blue, 6 = Pink, 7 = White, 8 = Black). There have been issues with using the colour black, and you need to type “^” twice. This will leave the annoying “^” in your name, but I guess that’s the sacrifice you make for using the colour black in your name…I have never come across a way to use black in your name in BFP OR Quake III Arena where this isn’t so. • Binds: this is basically placing commands set to run whenever you press a key. To bind a command to a key is quite simple, for example, if I wanted to bind the name Sephiroth to the key “L” with the first four letters black, and the rest white, I would only need to type “/bind L name ^^8Seph^7iroth”, then hit enter. In order to activate it, I would simply close the console and press the “L” key and my name would automatically be changed to Sephiroth. You can also bind messages by using /Bind (Key here) say (Message here). In fact, you can bind ANYTHING in the commands I gave earlier to any key you wish. (For all those newbies out there, don't mind the vets calling you n00b and such...they're only teasin' :-P) |
