In the 70s it had to be the Monkey House (Dudeston Manor Inn) in Cato St Nechells.
It only served rough cider and was owned by an old lady who was helped out by her phyco son when he was not in nick.
all the furniture had been burned on the fire including the piano all that was left of it was a cast iron frame.
the cider was often watered down but they kept the strength up by dissolving barbiturates in the barrel.
there was a rumor that the landlady had a husband but he was kept gimp like in the cellar.
the clientèle used to bring odds and ends of food in and cook a stew on the fire at lunch time.
it was a den of criminals and drugs were on sale over the bar, the police never came near the place from fear.

What about the (ex)Trooper in Chelmsley Wood. The Artful Dodger or the Trade Winds on Castle Vale ? Or , dare I say it, The Bagot !

all good contenders for pubs full of hard cases.
the monkey itself however was hard. the customers had reduced it to almost rubble.
for a long period a broken gas pipe spewed flame from a wall. the gents bog had no pipework left and urine overflowed into the bar.
characters like little tommy just would not be tolerated anywhere else, an old dosser that was frequently incontinent and had to live on the ground floor of the big house in highgate (The dry homeless lived on the top floor, the more you pissed yourself the lower down you lived (it is now a posh hotel, The Chambelin)).
i remember a bloke parking a ladder outside one night stopping off to get pissed on his way to burgle a factory.
a tribe of itinerant irish were the only people i can remember getting a ban, but even then they were allowed to drink outside on the back of their lorry complete with tables.
it was not so much full of young hardnuts but the dregs of society, junkies, whores, degenerates and the sad insane that did not care if they smelled of shit.

The Trade Winds on the Vale certainly takes some beating, but I'd like to nominate the British Oak in Stirchley. Go in there on your own without a crash helmet on and you'll certainly take some beating.

the broadway was a hard pub. for many years two families had fought to control it.
in the end the brewery gave up and flogged it to Mc Donalds.
The black horse next to Onslow`s was another place not to walk into alone.
I think the pub nearest my house (the White Lion on Muntz St) looks pretty hard, it is full of common people that shout a lot and girls with black eyes and coffee latte kids that smell of wee.Last time i was in the place there was an old tramp drinking mild who occasionaly belched the word "bollocks" for no reason. they now have karaoke evenings. i have not been in there for many years so i do not know how hard it realy is.
The Windsor used to be a bit tasty as was Yates Wine Lodge when it was on New St.

no idea how hard it is now, but i always was afeared of the lyndhurst.

usual sort of thing, but what stuck in my mind was one of the two gaffers having his nose shot off durring a brawl.

they closed it for a few weeks & the reason it sticks in my mind was that my band played a gig in the back room the day it re-opened. we were crap (both in general, and in particular that night) but i'd kinda like to think that it was because people were scared that it was empty.

The Rock in alumn rock, i wouldn't go in there... The King George on the Bristol Road in Northfield was pretty rough too, now it's a chinese. The Beeches in frankley is also rough as they come.

I did have an idea of a great T.V. show called Pub Runner. Basically 2 teams from anywhere in the country have to visit the roughest pubs in each others home town and drink 1 pint in each. Visiting each within a set time. So the birmingham team would be drinking in manchester's roughest say and the manchest guys would be drinking in our rough houses..

Now THAT would be REALITY T.V. worth watching.

Bloody good idea, you should get in touch with the head of programming at ITV and Channel 4 (I don't think the BBC would be interested, they've got enough aggro at the moment). Has anyone ever been in the Mercat Cross, by the way? Nice. And the Roscommon Bar on Digbeth High Street? Common isn't the word.

nice to have you on board skoobz.
did you spend much time in the monkey?
most of the regulars were also regulars in HMP winson Green if i remember well.
i used to love the fact that the monkey had cardboard instead of glass for windows.

my family lived on cato street for many years.

fortunately my visits were really sluming it but many or most of the punters in there were really capable of no better.
i went out with a stunning girl i met there but her life of poncing drugs from the old cancer victim she was squatting with was far to much for me and the relationship never bloomed beyond the sexual and a visit to the pox doctors.
all your family told you was true about the monkey house. it was the dead end.
