replied on: 2/23/2007 10:18:34 AM I was in the Midlands at the weekend and got dragged screaming and kicking into a Harvester in Walsall on saturday afternoon (I know, the shame, oh okay I admit it, I've got a sneaky liking for the places). Imagine my suprise when in walks a full-on wedding party, (including bride, groom, bridesmaids, mums, dads, aunts etc all dressed in the proper get-up) pulls up a table and proceed to have their wedding reception. You've never seen anything like it. The bride herself was resplendent in white nylon, the groom in an ill-fitting monkey suit and the three tattooed whales of bridesmaids stood behind them, in a fetching peach crimplene, queueing up at the salad cart! The finishing touch came after the speeches and flowers for the bride's mom when the whole bridal party, having devoured several full house "Combine Harvesters", stood outside in the carpark having a fag together. I was slack jawed, all I could do was stare open mouthed which probably wasnt the most polite thing to do, but come on, what would you do? Cor, ain't love great? |

replied on: 4/2/2007 12:54:10 PM I used to work for Ansells when I left school and so spent my early working years in some of the more salubrious places in Birmingham, luckily for me it was nearly always in the morning/mid afternoon so there was little horror witnessed first hand. Also through playing football I used to get to some delightful little spots across the city - My team played out The Stockland in Stockland Green which was not the most pleasant of environments. Some that I came across that have long lingered in the memory and some that I have heard great things about are; The Bagot, Pype Hayes. The Chester Arms, Castle Bromwich. The King of the Road, Newtown. (Snide boozer but nice Gammon & Chips) The Mackadown (I used to hear stories of a guy called "The Neck" who apparently ran things at the Mackadown - I also heard that he was cut down by a machete in the late nineties. Anyone shed any light on that one or is "The Neck" an urban myth?) The Stockland, Stockland Green. The Skylark, Castle Vale. The Yenton, Wylde Green. The Lyndhurst, Erdington. (Again, tales of overtly long blades being wealded are abound at this place) Finally, the worst place I ever went to was not a pub but a club. For some reason I drunkenly agreed to go along with half of Slade Celtic's lads to the Elbow Rooms at the end of one season and it was frightening. It was like something from Only Fools & Horses, completely stuck in the 80's. I was too drunk to really appreciate the horror of the place which I took to be a good thing but I was sober enough to notice one of our number singing "Keep Right On" at about 2am and given the places proximity to Villa Park, I decided that it was time to leave and got a cab home. I remember thinking that the steps from the entrance to the taxi were the riskiest that I had ever taken! |

replied on: 4/3/2007 9:22:11 AM Aaah the minstrel wanderers - I remember em well from the late 80's - 90's. Spent many an unconscious evening in the f&g with Tractor ranting at me for 'spending all your money up the town then coming in here treating this place like a hotel with a pound in one hand and your d*ck in the other'. 'appy days - Dave |

replied on: 4/3/2007 10:33:55 AM Talking of biker mayhem - I managed to be in 3 different pubs when they were systematically demolished by the old 69'ers/cycle tramps. These were the speedwell, the wheatsheaf and The good companions - ring any bells here? Dave |

replied on: 6/12/2007 3:45:13 AM There's been many a hard pub in Brum but they don't get anymore fiercesome than The Pack Horse (R.I.P) in Shard End. Many a people share the scars - mental AND physical, from that particular establishment under Bob's reign (old skool) in the mid 80's. The pub was eventually knocked to the ground, after several attacks on it, early this century - maybe 2003....but the Spirit of The Pack Horse lives on....and will do forever. It may have been rough....it may have been tough....but in two decades plus, i have yet to find, a pub that beholds a tenth of the atmosphere that The Pack Horse did. An old gypsy told me that the flats that were built upon that site would not last for long, & that The Pack Horse would reemerge for it's 'Second Coming' It would be a brave man to bet against it. |

replied on: 6/15/2007 6:37:41 PM The Broadway or as my dad used to call it Broadmoor...he used to run it in the early eighties along with a few others...Giro pubs he called them, regulars yes but every two weeks. Anyhow back to The Broadway (mcdonalds). Whilst my dads name was above the door he decided to crack down on drug use on premises, a noble move but this was bordseley green and home to the zulu's. He asked one gentleman to leave the premises for smoking a cheeky one when this bloke turned on my dad with an ashtray and put him in a coma for two weeks resulting in epilepsy and lifelong disability. He also ran The Harriers in Aston and decided to alter the villa bar to first team in...he never learned did my dad. |

replied on: 10/29/2007 12:50:49 AM Has anyone said The Beehive which stood next to Rusty Lee's on Soho Road? Perhaps not hard as such, but scary for someone of senior years like myself. Especially when you were trying to score a five of leb with the last of your pension money. The little charmers. |

replied on: 12/3/2007 8:07:06 PM Good to see this still up and running; would just like to add a few nominations: Hobson's Choice, Woodgate Valley - this was my local in my formative years on the Valley, an absolute gem Grant (Grunt) Arms, Cotteridge - just not a nice place at all, full of Noses Ward End pub (is this place still open?) Harlequin, Shard End (is this still open??) Barley Mow, Bartley Green - an absolute shithole, literally back and beyond at the terminus of the No.23 bus, says it all... Hen and Chickens, Digbeth - but still like to go there for a pint. Pelham Arms, Alum Rock - how did this place stay open for so long? An absolute tip... The Armada, under Spaghetti Junction - when i lived in Erdington this was my local, rough as arseholes but very welcoming once the locals knew your face. |
