I seem to remember the mercat was the alternative pub for goths who didnt want to got to the toredor in the evening. Havent been for years since the goths got moved on when they knocked it all down.

Goths only liked it because there is no windows and there's not even a remote chance any harmful sunlight will land upon their pasty bodies.

Perhaps that was just the vampire goths? No direct sunlight, no looking in mirrors. The Mercat would have been perfect for them. Bless 'em.

The Yew Tree is/was certainly a candidate for not the hardest pub in the slightest, as it did get knocked down and erased from the skyline. A hard pub would've put up more of a fight. Fancy replacing a raucous drinking establishment with a Co-op and a costa coffee. It's just not East Birmingham if you ask me.

The same can obviously be said for the Broadway. Didn't put up much of a fight when McDonalds took it over. However the customers did the first night it opened as a McDonalds "restaurant", there was a riot and they've had bouncers on the door ever since.

I vote for the Ale Stake on Gooch Street in Highgate, by the Costcutter supermarket. I was at the shops buying a paper one Saturday morning (long story), and the person before me in the queue at the newsagent/offy bought a half-bottle of scotch which he paid for entirely in 20p pieces, then sat outside the door of the pub with his (I presume) wife, who was drinking White Lightning. They were obviously waiting for the pub to open, and that was at about a quarter to 10 in the morning. Not sure about relative hardness, but it looks pretty scary.

It's rough but not what I'd call "hard". Stuck my head round the door on the day of the Paddy's Day Parade and it was packed to the gunnals with chavs & chavesses getting off their heads on alcopops.

Anybody ever stop for a pint in 'The Gladiator' on Bells Lane, Druids Heath? Never stopped for a pint there myself, but my bro told me that when he had a drink there he observed a couple of lads, upon spying the no.50 bus coming along Bells Lane from the terminus, finish their drinks off and jump out the window to dash to the bus stop. The 15ft drop to the pavement outside didn't appear to concern them.
