replied on: 11/10/2004 4:40:19 PM That place used to be the Erdington Arms!!! An Atkinsons house, the brewery was not far from Lovers Walk in Aston. Now that place was hard, frequented by the nice quiet lads who worked at the shit farm just up the road between the river Tame and Tyburn Road. The place was known as the muckman for obvious reasons and if your face did not fit they would drop a turd into your pint to let you know. Most of the locals lived in the red brick estate between Weelwright Road and Bromford lane and had completed their Education in Winson Green. |

replied on: 12/1/2004 10:51:07 PM Nice to see the Skylark getting a mention. I believe more money is spent on Charlie in the bogs than ever changes hands over the bar for ale. A good list of places to avoid, I salute you. |

replied on: 12/8/2004 3:13:33 AM Surprised it took so long for The Mount and The Wryly (sp?) to get mentioned! Also, from what I can gather, the Crossways Court wasn't the nicest place to drink back in the day. The Trade Winds on the Vale would definately be up there I'd think, although I never had any trouble as I was drinking with the right ppl but I could see that they aren't fond of outsiders. On a side note, does anybody drink there? Maybe we have mutual friends? |

replied on: 12/15/2004 9:46:52 PM I think a lot of the time "hard" is being translated as "rough". For instance, the Duke Of York in Harborne and the British Oak in Stirchley, whenever I've had the pleasure of visiting, have been very, very rough but not hard, I never felt threatened anyway and I'm a bit of a wimp! Various pubs in Harborne could be nominated over dfifferent times, just because they tended to be places where Quinton, Harborne, Bartley Green and Weoley Castle "gangs" would meet up and have slight - er - disagreements. One pub that I was terrified of, although it's gone now, thank the Lord, was the Breedon Cross in Stirchley. A friend of mine was attacked by a load of thugs once who were trying to crash a private party there. It all turned a bit ugly and a load of guns appeared from nowhere! My friend actually died outside (wasn't shot, just very badly beaten up), but thankfully, was revived and lived to tell the tale. The Raven in Weoley Castle, I've heard people say is a bit dodgy as well, but I don't know. It's always seemed OK to me when I've been there. Although that hasn't been for a good few years now. For roughness, I used to love the Swan and Mitre in Aston. Match days wouldn't have been match days without a visit there! |

replied on: 12/23/2004 9:46:25 AM Would have to be the Glebe, long gone now, but I remember once I dared to walk past it and three sovereign adorned girls came out to start on me. My then boyfriend explained to me that they didnt understand why i wasnt pushing a buggy? The Chester was always good for a laugh, if your idea of a laugh was being strip searched in the toilets for drugs. And i couldnt leave out the Spitfire- Rough as your nan´s beard. |

replied on: 2/1/2005 11:00:31 AM Has anybody else been in the B3 bar on Old Square opposite the Square Peg? Sweet Jesus it's not nice. We mistakenly thought we'd see have a look to see what it was like now it's been 'done out'. Can't imagine how bad it must have been if that's an improvement. Could see us getting a right battering - and that was just from the women. Everyone in there was either clinically mad, sociopathically violent or both. The song "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" must have been written there. I shan't be returning in a hurry |

replied on: 2/1/2005 10:12:38 PM There was a bar down a subway near there many years back called "The Brown Derby" I had to escort an unconvicted murderer there once to keep him clear of some people that wanted his bollocks. As far as I was concerned his nuts were up for grabs. |

replied on: 2/3/2005 3:27:20 PM Ah yes the good old Brown Derby, I'm not too surprised you chose this place to take a murderer for a pint, it's so close to Lloyd House. It's changed a lot over the years, it used to be just a rough and ready concrete dump of a pub. It now seems to be the establishment of choice for widows, orphans, cripples, idiots, madmen, victims of boils, vicars, ranters and ravers. Last time I strolled past, I hardly recognised the place. It seems to have found its own microclimate and there's a very strange atmosphere around there now. Just inside the doors, once you've navigated the Turkish bouncers, there's the usual pandemonium of bears dancing jigs and hermaphrodites tottering around on stilts, but what sets it apart from the other city centre bars is the brimstone fog shrouding the place. The lounge bar can get busy, what with the giant bejewelled dogs and miniature nut trees. I think the main attraction is the bidets in the bogs, they're certainly popular with the throng of Austrian barber-surgeons that usually drink there. I seem to think there are now some leech stalls round the back of Lewis's too. You can't complain really, it's either there or going to The Old Contemptables with its boiling sea of linseed oil and harvest of mushrooms. Fucking mushrooms.... |
