Yes, it's called the White Swan. Although, by now, that particular swan is probably a bit greyish looking...like the one that lives in Tyseley tip.

The Gary Owen, anyone?

FYI: The sportsman in Aston isn't so much rough (as in hard) as it is a bloody scumbags paradise. You've got the old guy who eats lightbulbs and takes out his glass eye and places it into his pint when he stumbles off to the bog. Not to mention the guy with a wooden leg who lost it after falling over a bridge after leaving the sportsman, only to fall onto a traintrack. There's more to that story if you ask him. Basicly all of the regs have their own 'special moves', charming. Assholes. I digress.

The College Arms, Kingstanding. I remember the spirit of Noel being celebrated one christmas day with a gang of men cheerfully whacking each other with pool cues in the car park.

The King Charles (The Charlie), Kingstanding. It was the sort of place that you could say, 'I went to a fight and a dance broke out'. I remember once two men were arrested and shoved into two police panda cars, still struggling. The cars stopped abruptly fifty yards down the road and the coppers pulled the men out, then got back in the cars and quickly sped away.

I went to The Jester in Smallbrook Queensway once and overheard someone ask his mate if they could kill some-one. The man thought about it and said, "eventually".

Through the history of Birmingham different pubs have taken the crown as the hardest pubs in Brum .. the Broadway was known through the late sixties and seventies as the hardest around east Birmingham but in the 70s and 80s till it got closed and then torn down by police orders the Happy Tropper has to be put up as one place that had the toughest nuttiest bunch of thugs in Birmingham, it may have been the fact that Chelmesley Wood was the biggest housing estate to get built in the UK and it was the first stage of Birmingham's outer ring housing project .. thousands of family's from all over Birmingham got the chance to move to C/wood when it first got built and if you drank in the Trooper you better be a Blues supporters .. you only have to read the first pages of the Zulu warriors book to hear the Happy Trooper being mention.

I saw the leopard in erdington mentioned. Always a fine pub, full of nutters but not too bad. the swan in erd was always full of pissheads but not real hard guys. My vote would go to the college arms, kingstanding but its long gone now. If anyone is feeling brave try the Kingstanding Pub, the only pub where verything stopped when i entered. Honourable mentions to The Meercat, the Gladiator in druids heath..loads more..

Gotta be the Trocadera in Needless Alley,
While taking a slash in the gents,
saw this guy in the stalls stuffing his old feller down this poor geezers throat.

Couple of pubs around Balsall Heath deserve a mention... The Coach and Horses, The Alestake and The Malt Shovel - all dens of inequities where drinkers would half-inch your eyeballs and come back for the sockets. Definetely wouldnt leave my granny there.

When was this? Because back in the seventies the Troc was well known as a gay pub (people used to call it the "Trocaqueero"), where the kind of incident you describe was presumably standard procedure.

BTW, the Troc is on Temple Street. The pub in Needless Alley was the Beer Kellar.
Now that could be a slightly dodgy place. A bloke I used to work with was once attacked by a hammer-wielding biker there, and a quick-tempered friend of mine once punched a smack-head to the floor there following a trivial argument. The smack-head then followed my friend out into the alley and smashed a bottle over his head.
When they met each other again the following week, however, they shook hands and got on quite well together after that. My friend was even a mourner at the smack-head's funeral several years later.
Happy days.

The Trocadero had plenty nuff indie gigs happening in there a couple of years ago. Never been in, but it'd surprise me too if it was a hardknock place.

it's had a varying reputation, for being the headquarters of various football 'crews', and for quite a time being a gay bar.

It's a top pub tho', and one of the few real boozers - as opposed to bars - right in the city centre.
