replied on: 3/21/2004 10:48:44 PM "Alrooight are yer bab?" Followed by "ahhh" I was told by a woman once when she first came to Brum she was visiting some Brummies and the mother of the family kept saying "Our babby's late in. I wonder where our babby is till this time?" Thinking she was referring to a little boy, my friend sympathised with the other woman's anxiety about the babby being out so late. Suddenly a big six foot geezer of about 30 walks in and the mother says, "oh look, here's the babby". |

replied on: 11/20/2004 10:23:52 AM My Nan's favourite saying was "are ya torkin to me or chewin a brick?" and she also used to say about my uncle, who had a rather affected accent "he torks like he's gorra quid in iz gob" I'm told that these are good Brummy sayings As for "cunted" and "Wankered" I live in the South West and all the Local Daves use those words, so I think they are not exclusively Brummy. I think the Brummy word for pissed is "Kaylied" |

replied on: 11/22/2004 8:19:21 PM "ISLAND" is Brummie for roundabout. I used to live just outside London and took great delight in using the word "island" when giving people directions. They didn't have a clue what I meant, but being Cock-er-neys, were too proud to ask!!! Other words that I've discovered on my travels are just Brummie-isms are: POP for a soft drink of any description, except fresh fruit juice. OUTDOOR for the offie. FAIR PLAY as in, well done or I don't blame you, etc. BAB a term of endearment. R as in yes, that's right (not sure of correct spelling, could be AH, AHH or ARE?). BOSTIN, fantastic, great, etc. Although this could originally be from Black Country? Also, putting a "Z" on the end of peoples' names, such as Daz (Darren), Gaz (Gary), Baz (Barry), Kaz (Karen)etc, etc. |

replied on: 12/20/2004 8:44:19 PM I was interested to see your user name - Peaky Blinder, my dad told me once about a gang who used to hang around where he lived, in Summer Lane, - they used to put razor blades in their peak caps I think, and I'm sure they were called peaky blinders. I'd be interested if you had any more details about them. I'll add some of dads old brummie sayings as I think of them, - such as, when he had a good pint of beer, he'd call it "lovely larrup", god knows what that meant. |
