Brummie sayings
replied on: 12/25/2004 9:28:19 PM My father also told me of Peaky Blinders in Summer Lane, nan also used to refer to people from Pakistan (or maybe india in general?) as parkies... this was, i can asure you, by no means racist, if anything she was probably a very early p.c. brigade contender but we all sniggered when she said it regardless. Could that be considered offensive? not really as to my knowledge it was never used by racists! |

replied on: 3/8/2005 10:47:30 PM A lot of Brummies refer to hospitals by shortened names. Like: The Kids, the Matty, the old Acci, Deadly Road, you know that sort of thing. "er was born up the Matty but 'ad to goo straight in the Kids 'cause 'er 'ad an 'ernia". |

replied on: 9/23/2005 6:44:46 PM A Yam-yam is an inhabitant of the urban region known as the Black Country, to the west of Birmingham. If you've heard of places like West Bromwich, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Walsall, Stourbridge etc - those ends. I am a Yam-yam. God hermself told me that we are her chosen people. On the bus one night, this was. |

replied on: 11/13/2005 11:43:48 PM "Oi, Bezza, them babbies ands is a frozzan, ain dey got no mits? Them babbies a be poorly sick. Call ya selva muvver ya stupid bitch?" Meaning, "I say Beryl, look at the cold hands of these young children. Don't they have any gloves to wear? They'll be ill with influenza. Parenthood requires a greater degree of responsibility in my opinion." Just one of the common coloquiel sayings from the West Midlands area as I've recorded over the years. This one published in my most recent book on the great Birmingham slum clearance "Smiling Through The Rubble: The Day the Corporation Bulldozed Garbett Street". |
