| bounder chairman of the board Rank: Ozzy | Top Of The Shops posted on: 4/28/2004 10:58:09 AM Well, names for shops anyway. I've been increasingly amused with the names (and other things) that some of our Brummagem shops have. I recon I'm gonna take a trip out this weekend at somepoint and photograph my faves. At the moment i'm loving: Safebury's (supermarket on Hagley road) Tanfastic (Harbourne) Enoch's Miscellaneous Stores (Straford Rd) News & Booze (Shaftmoor Lane, Hall Green) Fags & Mags (King's Heath High St - are these two a chain i wonder?) Shelley's Hair Salon & Video Library (Stratford Road) & a special mentions to: the electrical shop Ascot TV (also stratford Rd) which has a sign that bears the legend "Website Open 24 hours" SNAX in Acock's Green that has attempted to bring cafe culture to the 'burbs with two patio chairs outside the shop on the pavement. |

replied on: 4/28/2004 2:44:05 PM There is a very dilapidated shop front in Stirchley (filthy windows, askew rotton woodwork, peeling black paint &c) that boasts the hand painted legend "21st Century", and indeed has done since the end of the last century. I've never seen it open, nor seen any clue for what it actually was intended to sell. If it was an augur for the empty, crushing disappointment experienced by many at that time, it works as a fantastic contemporary art installation. But I fear it's more likely someone planned to open a cyber cafe, got as far as glueing some milk bottle tops to the wall then decided they couldn't be bothered. |

Good Egg
replied on: 5/9/2004 10:18:29 PM The Good Egg (née Snax), New Canal Street. Specifically for their rhyming couplet: "For food that you can eat, at a price that's hard to beat." And the eerily familiar "Eat like a king for £1.50". |

Mr Egg
replied on: 5/10/2004 9:13:51 AM Hats off, of course to the wonderous Mr. Egg - who changed their "Eat like a King" slogan to "Eat like a Queen" in honour if the erm, y'know, development of Hurst st. |
