replied on: 12/23/2005 6:39:10 PM If charirity shopping is a form of divination then yesterday and today (the 23rd) I stumbled upon Stan Gooch Guardians of Ancient Wisdom whilst in the Science Fiction section of Kings Heath Oxfam, then found Edith Sitwell's English Eccentrics in Kidney Foundation. On the back, the fourth paragraph of the blurb read: "Mad Jack Mytton, the squire who drank eight bottles of port a day, spent half a million and set fire to his nightshirt to cure hiccups." Then found HD's The Walls do not Fall (1944) poem set in the blitz with Eygptian gods. Biography describes it as a 'syncretistic' poetic scripture. This was Moseley Oxfam. Gooch, Mitton, and HD; Science Fiction (and its intergenre occult science), Biography, and Jungian poetry; Drunkeness, kidneys, fire, the blitz etc etc. Its happening again. I shall be reading Edge of Orison over the Christmas break and see what comes around... |

You mention Jung and Gooch, Stan has said in ‘Total Man’ that Jung cites various estimates by mathematicians and philosophers of the against odds against chances in certain cases of extra sensory perception ( a form of synchronicity) and meaningful coincidence taking place. One of them was J. B. Rhine’s published experiments in precognition where the chances run into millions to one. The odds against our whole catalogue being mere chance must be higher still, probably incalculable. For Gooch though there is ‘ a need for a criterion involving meaning, involving a dynamic, involving some kind of outcome. It becomes necessary to distinguish between real meaning and meaningless meaning( as in the case of numbers turning up on roulette wheels). He says that ‘this is no easy task. It was further serendiptitious that Matey knew who they really were ( at least Ariel and a former partner – at first – and then it clicked with Chaz). A common link was established. However they were not to know the real connections with Burroughs, Sinclair and subsequently Alan Moore that they had unaethered. Sinclair's alter ego in 'Landor’s Tower', meets a ‘Prudence clone’ close to his encounter with the Kreeps. The guilty will know who I mean. It had become clear to Charlie through all our communication with him that the source of this essentialization was a certain person in a certain hostelry in the city centre dating back to the early to mid seventies.. From all this unravelled a geometry going back all the way to the mitochondria of Nicholas Lane. The guilty parties had been synchromeshed in a closed system by the Mittonian Strange Attractor. The only result could be heat death. |

I'm just feeling in a particularly aggressive mood today because I was told last night that our friend Guitar Sam was violently attacked by a gang of kiddie thugs outside an off-licence in Bearwood and had to be taken to City Hospital. According to Jimmy G. it could well have been one of those grotesquely mis-named "happy slapping" incidents. He also said that Sam is now out of hospital, but is understandably terrified of leaving his house. Honestly, if I ever met one of the pieces of rubbish that did that to Sam, I would permanently disfigure them. |

I've been looking at Prigogine and Stenger's 'Order out of Chaos' and find the following on p.123: "using combinatorial analysis it is easy to calculate the number of ways in which each different distribution of N particles can be achieved.Thus if N=8 there is only one way of placing the eight particles in a single half. Equal distribution of the particles between the two halves can be carried out in 8!/4!4!= 70 different ways where n!= 1.2.3...For values of N of the order of N to the 23rd values found in macroscopic systems the overwhelming majority of possible disributions corresponds...." Similarly in Roger Penrose's ' The Emperor's New Mind': ".. this separation into dynamical equations and boundary conditions has been historically of vital importance. But I do not believe this division is here to stay. A possible type of initial singularity other than that of the Big Bang would be the singularity in a white hole. White holes would violently disobey the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Why is the universe not riddled with white holes since it is riddled with black holes? An argument is invoked in the so-called anthropic principle. However the argument can get nowhere close to the needed figure of 10to the10 to the 123rd.. It seems that we are left with the conclusion that the CQG( correct quantum gravity) must be a time-assymmetric theory." And then our old friend Thoth appears and as if by some occult accident his name is asymmetrical – it has changed slightly rather like Nick Lane and Nick Land. Gravy Hole might have found it quite amusing. I realized too though that it said something about the above posting where Ariel and Racheymaus and Matey for that matter are faced with a decision over decidabilty. We ourselves have entered the realms of literary creation and played with meaning. Do they wish to be their literal flesh entities in this construction or signifiers in our metalogic. It’s an important question .For me the question of the synchrony of the events is crucial. It’s as though once again they have appeared magically out of the aether and at the same time both confirm and refute Derrida’s thesis. They err on the side of affirmation, the binary opposite of Derrida’s own entropic undecidability. The crucial type of meaning that Stan Gooch has mentioned They suggest an answer to the logical conundrums which have already been brought up which lead to the problem of infinities and how to transcend them. As Prigogine has pointed out in chemical processes, they would appear to represent a spontaneous bifurcation point or fluctuation - the unexpected merging of chance and necessity. As was Ariel’s original posting, it needed to be there. Prigogine actually uses the phrase ‘strange attractor’. For it to happen in the macroscopic world employing the human mind in such a labyrinthine way would seem to point to an independent non-material intelligent entity using Mitton as a medium which attracts these particles of information. As a hypothesis it would have been wildly improbable but the process acts to demonstrate itself independent of initial conditions. This is like the miracle of life wildly improbable as as a hypothesis but compelling if you look at the statistical evidence of all the synchronicities coming together in this metalogical form. It’s the opposite of a black hole. A confirmation of a creative source or perhaps David Bohm’s enfolded information, Sheldrake’s morphic resonance etc. Anyway I have to go now it’s the party at the Ecole Normale Superieure. It’s Christmas Eve . I’ve no time right now for the birth of new paradigms. I’m on holiday!!! |

Neither have we and we hope that he has not literally fallen into a black hole. For The Major Triad our Christmas pageant is now over and it is Christmas Day. So I think that it is right, Mr. Bounds, that you close the thread at this point since it will restore Classical unity to our stage if we finish with the thread still registering the 24th (U.S.A. time). Mitty's time as Brummie of the year is drawing to a close. All things must pass. And that reminds me. Last night I started reading a novel and it was called 'A Chemical Romance'. I discovered from reading the marginalia that there was a dedication ; ' For Maddy'.
