That twat Seb Coe sent his chief cow Tessa Jowell to Brum to drum up support for their poxy Olympic bid. That other bastion of good character Doug Ellis allowed her to use Villa Park to get us to throw our weight behind the bid.
They should have told her to ****off. Where was the capital's support when we were bidding for the '92 olympiad? When we were the most sensible choice for the new national stadium where did it go? London. They try to get the Motor Show off us at every available opportunity and everything else we try to go for, they block. Like the new high-rise in the city centre that was going to be the tallest in Britain, but had to lose a few floors because London wanted that particular honour.
Now they need support for their hopeless cause, they come to us, cap in hand, with their big flag. They want to roll that flag into a big ball and shove it up Sebastian Coe's smug Tory bumhole.

well said.

i heard a minister - jowell i think, can't remeber - saying that the olypics would "only cost £10 per every man, woman and child in Britain". that's £10 out of our pockets to redevelop & focus attention on a run-down part of London.

can't they do it on their own (with a bit of euro-help) like we've had to?

It's a fair point but I think I'll support the London Olympics where possible. It always seems to go to the biggest city or capital city anyway...can't think of any recent exceptions (the Commonwealth games are usually a bit more imaginative). But can you imaging Birmingham staging the event? I can easily picture the city elders decreeing a stately Richard Rogers designed £200m stadium, drawing lots of pictures of it for the Voice newspaper (sorry, Forward! magazine) for three years then deciding they don't want it after all, as its too expensive. And then relocating the event a fortnight before opening to Perry Barr dogracing track, and an opening ceremony provided by Judas Priest, Bob Carolgees and Charlie Mitton. The olympic torch would be lit by Cliff Richard, then extenguished after forty minutes because the council can't justify paying the gas bill.

Salt Lake city, Los Angeles, etc. etc. It doesn't have to be the capital.

I don't think we'd do a very good job of it either - just resent it's whole-hearted governmental support all of a sudden.

Livin' darn Sarf, I have to say folk round here are none too keen on the idea either. They know full well the bloody Govt/Ken Livingstone will fleece them rotten. The prospect of awful disruption, wasted resources, puffed-up bloated toads of politicians strutting the stage and all the other civic hogwash to go with it frankly appalls me. So NO to COE and BALLS to BLAIR. And SHIT OFF SAMMARANCH (or whatever he's called)

BTW, who else was at The Dome for the big victory party on that terrible afternoon in 86, when a shocked crowd were told that Barcelona had pipped Brum by a short head? Or did we come last? Whatever, I'll never forget the tears and the wailing of the over-emotional participants. Young and naive in those days I may have been, but at least I got the arvo off work and got pissed.

And I'd pay good money to see Judas Priest do an Olympic opening spectacular. Breakin' the law!

Look on the bright side - at least that lardy-arsed curly-mopped twat Jeremy Clarkson won't be visiting Brum this year.

Surely London's innate exploitative awfulness only highlights how lovely Brum is. Should this thread not be relocated to the 'I agree' section. Pants, are you suggesting London's obscenity rubs off on the rest of urban England?

You get that on the msn toolbar as well, it's so when you do a search you click that and it highlights all of that word in the results.

The last time I checked, New York was still NOT the capital of the U.S.

Don't despair, give it time. Soon London will be so full of stuff like money, stadia, shows, famous people and tallest buildings that they'll have no more room left. They'll have to give some of it to us. Or maybe London will just keep growing until we're all Cockneys.

No, nor is it an Olympic Host city. It is the biggest city though... does your Vimto Book of Knowledge concur?

I thought New York was one of London's main competitors to host the next Olympics, along with Paris, etc.
