| hubgirl Quote | Reply | | Shittiest High Street posted on: 4/3/2006 3:48:36 PM Years of city living (before it was cool, comfy, or popular) has clearly spoilt me. I was used to having Rackhams on my doorstep, now my nearest shops are in Northfield. Wow that High Street is a sight to behold. Reminds me of childhood shopping trips to Erdington High Street back in the late seventies. So, for me it has a slightly nostalgic feel but, really, its bog awful isnt it? Half the shops are shut, the only sucesses seemlingly Iceland Greggs and Wilkinsons. No wonder everyone looks so fecked off. According to BCC's website about 20,000 people use this high street every day. Does a shittier High street exist within Brum? |

replied on: 4/12/2006 11:12:28 PM It's got to be Northfield as worst, nothing to redeem it, even the charity shops have their souls sucked out (teams of experts sift out the good stuff to sell on ebay before the tat even hits the shelves) I had a depressing walk through Oldbury today, to collect a parcel from the distant DHL office. Disused M&B pubs line the deserted roads, industrial estates & factories pepper the landscape, amongst pockets of residential areas...and nowhere to cross the fucking road at roundabout after roundabout. One good thing I saw: a sign at a car yard reading "Punctures £5, tyres £10", I could send it in to the Guardian weekend magazine, didn't have my camera and can't face going back so if anyone wants to make an easy tenner... |

replied on: 4/18/2006 3:53:12 PM quote: It does. I've occasionally wondered when pound shops, due to inflation, will have to become £1.10 shops (like Mr Egg) or whether the nature of the products sold necessarily will have to become shittier and shitter to remain saleable at a profit for a pound, until the wares are little more than things swept in from the street. Until last week, when on the High Street of Huddersfield, Yorkshire, I encountered my first 99p shop - a savage attempt to undercut the many £ shop competitors on that street. Over the event horizon, now entering the Einstein Rosen bridge, to further your analogy. (I've also wondered whether the pound shop on Kings Heath High Street which sells everything at "£.1" is legally obligated to sell its products at 10p each - point one of a pound - to anyone who demanded so.) |

replied on: 4/18/2006 6:37:00 PM Good call. I was going to nominate Erdo High St too but seeing as I haven't paid a visit for a few years I thought I might be doing it a gross disservice. Quite improbably I had reasoned that they might have bulldozed it and replaced it with a shiney new shopping street; it seems my reverie has been cruelly dashed. Anyway, it was total crap in the eighties when I lived there, heaven knows what it must be like now. |

My beloved Rowley is only down the road a bit from Oldbury. Everyone in the entire area (myself included) has worked at The Sava at some point in their life. |

replied on: 4/19/2006 7:46:00 AM although not strictly a high street, i would like to suggest the oasis market. I think in my entire 28 years ive brought one maybe two items from the whole place. oasis itself isnt to bad if you want drug paraphanelia or a complete goth wardrobe its the market bit outside that im on about. stall after stall of cheap copy clothes that never seems to get sold. Its a bit of a pick pocket delight with everything crammed into such a small space. |

replied on: 4/25/2006 11:31:48 AM Erdo is still pretty shitty. I think there is going to be some work on the six ways (to get mugged) island which might improve things, or attract more investment but somehow I doubt it. |

replied on: 4/25/2006 11:56:07 AM I grew up in Erdington, but hadn't been to the High St. in years- before yesterday. What a complete shit hole. There are lots of pound shops, but even more carpet shops, weirdly enough. They cost more than a pound, though. |

replied on: 5/10/2006 10:14:01 AM I saw this topic and immeadiately thought 'Erdo, obviously. No question' but then was reminded about Northfield... Jeez it's a toughy. Maybe there needs to be a north Birmingham and south Birmingham category? If pushed though, I've gotta go for Northfield. At least Erdo's padestrianised and not on a main road, so it's kept out of sight. I've got friends in Northfiled and so get the High Street inflicted on me every time I go to see em. I do try to close my eyes in case there's some sort of Medusa effect but it's a right pain when you're driving. |

replied on: 5/19/2006 8:43:14 PM I still live in Erdington, although i'm away at York uni at the mo. I have to admit that Erdington is not as nice as it used to be, but it is still home and i love it all the same. That Skint programme on channel 4 last year was based in Erdington with Vernon the Big Issue seller and cash converters- cheap dvd's. I'm sure it is going to be on tv again soon because over christmas i was in Erdington and cameras were following Vernon around. Does anyone know when it is going to be on, because i might look out and see if i am in it. |
