I know they are called civil servants but why does everyone ive ever had to deal with has done nothing but hinder me with red tape or plain lies. They are meant to help people but some go that extra mile to ensure that you get nowhere. I also have a huge problem with the ultra relaxed dress code of wearing what the hell they like to work, some do make the effort but most look like they are wearing last nights clothes picked up off the floor. If i was being told that i cant get on the housing list because im not considered in enough need, id rather have it done by someone who looked a bit more presentable than the complete arse who was dressed in jeans and a jumper and who couldnt wait until she had told me that despite having my tennancy agreement terminated because the owner had already sold the house and i was facing homelessness, to tell her friend that she was going up the arcadian to get hammered with her mates. The council spend too much time doing nothing for the city as a whole whilst concentrating on minority interest events. I see that they are now looking into moving to fort dunlop so that all areas and departments are under one roof. this is a sensible idea so you know that it wont happen. They propose to move from louisa ryland house, the council house, lancaster circus and various other buildings so they can sell them off and pocket the cash. as these are public buildings can we expect to see some of the money back, maybe a bit of money spent on improvements to the central library?. i doubt it. rant over. |

replied on: 5/15/2006 4:17:23 PM im sorry i meant to say public servants, but still the sentiment remains the same. A point worth bearing in mind though, Sickness rates for workers in the public sector (people who work for councils and government departments as a whole) are significantly higher than those in the private sector. My overall point is that many people in this line of employment tend to be off sick more, work shorter hours and be more jobsworth than anyone else i have encountered. I have personal vendetta against the council over the way they treated me when facing homelessness with my then pregnant partner. Im glad to say that i got sorted with solihull council. |

replied on: 5/15/2006 8:35:23 PM It's hard for me to say anything now without it sounding like I'm trying to excuse what happened to you and your girlfriend, but the two phrases that leap to mind are A) when they pay peanuts, you have to expect monkeys; and B) I imagine you've never dealy with an insurance company if you've never found anyone else as jobsworth-ish. I do know what you mean though. Please be assured that we're not all like that, and those of us that aren't are just as disgusted as you by those that are (if you see what I mean). |

replied on: 5/17/2006 10:27:30 AM City Council workers don't exactly get paid peanuts do they? I realise it depends on the job being done, but, judging by the job vacancies in the papers most of them seem to be paid pretty well. The problem with the Council (in my opinion) is that it's too big and there's very little accountability. It's very frustrating when, after months of searching, you finally manage to identify a person who seems to be able to help you, and then they're constantly 'in a meeting'. |

replied on: 5/17/2006 5:43:31 PM Dunno. As a benefit processing civil servant, I can confirm that I do get paid peanuts. Given the number of our lot who leave to go and work for Walsall council I assume they probably are paid more, thinking about it. |

replied on: 6/13/2006 3:29:19 PM To be honest I thought they were all rubbish too, and then I had to deal with Wolvo and Sandwell Council and quickly realized how lucky we are, a busy day at Wolvo Council involves busily chatting to your pals, fobbing off the public and going home early, and they don't seem that badly paid to me. |

replied on: 6/20/2006 9:56:00 PM My son works at a Jobcentre impassing info from computer to client for peanuts. Well depends on by who's standards, but either way its not worth being threatened with murder on a daily basis!. |

replied on: 4/16/2007 12:15:47 PM I know the poor buggers are paid peanuts to procss council, housing and other benefit claims and generally keep the red tape flyng but you've got to say a good proportion of them don't deserve even peanuts (unless they are those really manky, non KP ones that are sold in some offlicenses for 99p)The job they do is a joke and they wouldn't get fired for screwing up like in proper jobs. They get bloody promoted! I really hate crap service but when you try to complain, you have to complain to the very same office you're complaining about!

replied on: 4/21/2007 10:10:41 AM I've no idea about councils, but I laugh at the idea of 'someone getting promoted in the civil service.' That's a good one, I'll remember that. |
