replied on: 7/27/2006 7:25:04 AM Yes, the very worst way for Digbeth to be described as booming. But at least we've moved on from the days when the inevitable implication of a news item containing the words "Irish," "pub" and "explosion," was "bomb." Maybe someone just accidentally left the gas on. |

replied on: 7/28/2006 8:15:13 AM quote: Oh no, not the Bartons! It won the CAMRA Pub of the Year award in 2004 and is (was?) the finest preserved/restored Victorian pub in Birmingham. No doubt this calamity will be the talk of the Wellington (whose gaffer used to run the Bartons in the 90s) over the weekend. |

replied on: 7/28/2006 8:30:49 AM I've only been there a couple of times, not too many old pubs left now in Brum - apart from the ones at the back of Digbeth. Does anyone know how bad the damage is? I think there was a fire at the Brewer & Baker at Camp Hill the other week. |

replied on: 7/28/2006 9:55:59 AM I think the Barton fire is rather severe (it needed 30 firemen)... I've had a few drinks in there over the years - quite a rough clientele, but there's a certain frisson to that kind of moody drinking... I spent quite a bit of my youth in the Barrel Organ (Dubliner)in the early 1980's...I saw many good bands there (The Vibes were a blast), and enjoyed listening to the mix of punk, 60's garage, reggae and generally oddball music... Having said that, it was a sh*thole... |

replied on: 7/28/2006 1:54:46 PM quote: And just a few weeks ago that dodgy nightclub in Hockley was spectacularly incinerated, shortly after the DJ there had been murdered. Do you think some kind of pattern might be emerging here? Also, a pub which might just as well burn to the ground now is the Flapper and Firkin, which Russ informs me is to be demolished soon to make way for - you guessed it - more sodding canalside yuppie apartments. Another knock-back for live music in the city. |

Do you think some kind of pattern might be emerging here? I think the new Managing Director of the Embers pub chain has spectactularly misunderstood his role in expanding brand awareness. Another pub closure that went unnoticed by many: the Fox & Grapes on Freeman Street. This pub closed last year and had the distrinction of being Birmingham's oldest pub. |

replied on: 7/29/2006 6:44:48 AM quote: Ah yes, the Fox & Grapes (aka "Tractor's") - legendary stop-over pub, HQ of the Minstrel Wanderers Super Slobs, and pretty much my brother's second home for many years. I didn't know it was the oldest pub in Birmingham though. What about the Big Bull's Head in Digbeth? |

replied on: 7/30/2006 11:24:49 AM How old is/was Tractor's then? Apparently its closure was connected with the planned Great Eastside Leap Forward, but if it really is the oldest pub in Brum, then maybe there is some sort of preservation order on it. Indeed, I notice that it still remains intact and untouched by the Eastside development so far, although surely a far worse fate than demolition would be if it was turned into some poncy yuppie wine bar. Pigeon would turn in his grave - or perhaps come back to haunt the place with the sound of him eating glass. |

replied on: 7/30/2006 12:16:54 PM c.1730. It's grade II listed and recognised as such by Eastside developers. "Awkward" buildings like this usually burn down during the night...maybe the recent Dubliner & Bartons Arms fires are to make it look like an arsonist at work to dispell suspicion from the developers when the F&G goes up. |
