In the past of course brum had a few writers - Walter Allen being the most famous, but also Henry Green one of my favourite writers set his great novel 'Living' in a Small heath factory. There's also 'Five Fags a Day' set amongst scrap pickers in Walsall (if that counts) by John someone is it Petty - another fine novel. There was an excellent short story writer from Selly Oak too but I've forgotten his name - it'll come to me after I post this.. |

replied on: 9/13/2006 11:32:43 AM Joel Lane - From Blue to Black i read that some years ago, and it was (from memory) very good, evocative of the back-end of town at the time. there's also Jonathan Coe's Rotter's Club (notable that the sequel is set almost totally in London). as for 'disguised' Brum i've been alerted to the exitence of David Moody's 'Autumn' (and sequels) which apparently features " a character watching the end of the world from the 9th floor of McLaren. A group of survivors set up a base in Aston University, ... scenes set in the old Virgin Megastore and the Law Courts and so on... " anyone read that one? that end of town does feel a bit liek the end of the world these days. |

replied on: 6/19/2007 3:52:56 PM Hi just to tell everyone of a new book set in Brum - Little Moscow by Mick Scully. Set in a fictional canal side pub in Tyseley among the city's underworld it's a tight set of noir stories. Rather than me going on about it you can hear ick in interview with the Stirrer at http://www.thestirrer.co.uk/mick_scully1406071.html He includes his top three back street pubs for you to agree or not with...
