TIGHT MEAT DUO
GAS SHEPHERDS
CITIES PREPARE FOR ATTACK!

THURSDAY 15TH MARCH
THE VICTORIA, JOHN BRIGHT STREET, BIRMINGHAM
£5 ENTRANCE, 8.30
myspace.com/taupe_uk
cp4@yahoo.co.uk
07981443819

An evening of improv-noise...

TIGHT MEAT DUO (Glasgow)
Drums: Alex Nielson. Besides his own projects Directing Hand and Scatter, he has performed with Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and Alasdair Roberts, and continues to collaborate with Richard Youngs and elusive American singer/songwriter Jandek.

Saxophone: David Keenan is an author, journalist and musician; he was the first writer to popularise the term 'free folk' in his Wire cover story. He is one third of Taurpis Tula and founder of Volcanic Tongue records.

GAS SHEPHERDS (Birmingham)
Found-sound gamelan over drone harmonium, tape decks and analogue mud: Delia Derbyshire meets Mayo Thompson in Tibet.

CITIES PREPARE FOR ATTACK! (Birmingham)
Improvised lone drone-delay guitar: layered mind-soundtracks.

Tight Meat were louder than the carpet, Gas Shepherds did their harshest set yet and CP4@ was like getting into a warm sonic bath. We're putting on Skaters next all being well. Not sure if its the ideal venue for this stuff though. Does anyone know how much downstairs at the Sunflower Lounge is?

I thought the Victoria's cosy old theatrical ambience was really nice. It's certainly got more character than the Sunflower.
But then I didn't have to haul a full drum kit up and down the stairs.

Anyway, I reckon Rooty Frooty could be a good place to put on more of this far-out stuff.

Ah yes, there. And a late bar no doubt. Any idea how much the venue could be hired for or who is contactable, m@ or anyone else.

Don't know how much it would cost, but I could inquire at the weekend.

www.myspace.com/sunflowersessions is their contact &c page.

I really loved the Gas Shepherds set, even just saying "Gas Shepherds" makes me happy. They could just appear and play anywhere, on the floors of bedrooms, attic spaces, on the pavement...I wish they had played like a xylophone the old radiator they were sitting in front of. I eagerly anticipate Seafood Lee's Gas Sheps release if / when.

Cities P4A also good; found a small box outside the pub of CDrs of "Cities Under Attack", presumably the same guy. The music here is more hectic, rather than the impending doom of "prepare for...". Wish they'd do Vienna Surprise Attack or Lima Retaliation live, they're really powerful.

Tight Meat Duo: ha ha there's THREE of them! They got a great response but it seemed like freeform jazzcore business as usual. Some great looking pic discs for sale. I forgot to bring money but found a big gold ring, which they didn't accept as currency.

You offered someone your ring in The Victoria and they didn't accept?

Blimey.

Yes I offered my ring to the tight meat duo. What's funny about that?

According to the geezer behind the counter at Rooty, it costs anything between 50 and 250 quid to hire the place, depending on what's happening at the Custard Factory on the same night.
Call 07747 037821 for further info.

Personally though, I think you'd be better off sticking with the Vic - cheesy party lights an' all.
The place has an endearing camp-theatrical charm.

BTW, I see that the Newt is now hosting live music, with new unsigned bands on Saturday and a blues night on Wednesday.
Maybe I should try to drag Mitton out of his current self-imposed musical retirement and see if I can get him a support slot there.

Birmingham promoting

Thanks M8ty. The promotion are on hold at the moment - a website and proper flyers await.

This is the sort of thing that gets my goat: There is a noise/improv tour going round most of the countries galleries and art centres such as the Arnolfini in Bristol: the sort of thing I thought about putting on some years ago finally goes 'mainstream' of sorts: http://www.qujunktions.com/asp/main.asp?id=138&style=article

....and suprise suprise no Birmingham date. I originally started promoting to reverse this trend ( although Warwick Arts Centre is usually the only Midlands dates for such tours ) so will have to start the dreadful process of bidding for funds and filling in projected audience forms for how many Asian lesbians we aim to attract. Unless Capsule start taking an interest in this stuff it will continue to pass us by.

The Tight Meat Duo concert was an all-round winner: great sounds...
Are you telling me that The Skaters are on hold now? Not fair!!! ;)
Their heavy voice rituals are a blast...

I have heard that the people who run Rooty-Frooty can be slightly lackadaisical and slack (ie forgetting that you have put an event on, so no-one turns up to unlock the place), so be aware of that if you decide to boojk there...

Incidentally, the Capsule girls were offered the 'Noise' tour about 6 months ago - and they really wanted to do it: however, the actual fee for the tour package was pretty high (well over a grand)...

They asked a few people (me included) if we thought that the concert would bring in enough people to be able to cover the costs, and we had to be honest and say that we unfortunately did not think so (based on previous experience)...
They could perhaps have gone down the funding route, except that they had already made proposals for all of the available funding in 2007 so that wasn't an option...

It's a real shame, but we just have to accept that - for one reason or another - the tastes of the audiences in Birmingham don't really extend to this kind of music (one only has to attend the BEAST nights to see that - the place would be empty if the conservatoire students didn't attend): in all honesty, the tastes of the majority of audiences globally don't extend to this kind of music - and, while that may grate sometimes, it is an unpleasant fact...

Birmingham promoting Jack Rose
replied on: 3/26/2007 2:57:29 PM

Well, I've just been offered to put on Jack Rose for May 17th for £200 plus accomodation, food and beer. He is doing a world tour.

If I can come up with a suitable venue and confirm the fee by Thursday its on. For those who don't know - its acoustic guitar raga/blues, carrying the axe for Fahey, Basho etc, and he used to be in prolific field-drone outfit Pelt, I think.

The Victoria is booked, The Rainbow is booked. The Bulls Head is booked, the Hare and Hounds won't do it now cause they reckon they only do bigger acts when its refurbed.

Accommodation and curry can be sorted. Can anyone think of a venue and do you think we'd actually get any one along AND not be badly out of pocket. How about Jack Rose in Polar Bear records? With cans of beer?

....Or is Birmingham shit, as KOTH suggests?

How about the Lamp Tavern?
Or the Market Tavern?
(both in Digbeth)

They both have 'function rooms' with stages...
If you do it, make sure you blitz on the advertising as it may be that he wouldn't pull in the necessary punters: I'll rustle up some support where I can...

Jack Rose has a beautiful loose style - I hope it comes off...

I'm uncomfortable with this. I don't hold with 'less gigs at The Hare & Hounds.' What I would like to see is 'more gigs at The Hare & Hounds.'

Bloody hell, if they're getting above themselves then they might stop doing the £1 tins of lager from the upstairs bar. I'd be proper upset in the event of that.

Thanks for this: it looks like its going ahead at Tower of Song, a new folk venue opened on St. Patricks day in Cotteridge but nothing is confirmed either way.
http://www.towerofsong.co.uk. This venue is on the 11 bus and isn't stinging for hire costs. Getting the price right is tricky: Do you reckon 31 people will pay £8 to see Jack Rose? so we can cover costs?
