Birmingham promoting Jack Rose

The new guy reckons its a 200-seat venue so I needn't bother with anything so lowly as 'might get 30 people'. I had a mate that saw Psychic TV there in 1986 or thereabouts and went seriously into it with homemade TOPY tatoos. I doubt he has had gender-realingnment-surgery though.

I get a vague feeling that they're not going to do as well as they think they might.

The deerhoof gig last year was heaving, the damo suzuki gig was too. Its a decent venue and better than the jug. Let's see if it survives the smoking ban

So was The Nightingales gig last month, and although I wasn't there I'm told the Ted Chippington one was too. So, that's four out of...?

I'm not completely sure The Jug is an accurate comparison for the new circumstances. They wouldn't have a fat lot more than four gigs per year either if they insisted on something-approaching-200 punters.

I agree with Russ that those gigs shouldn't really be taken as a yardstick for how many punters will turn up...

Deerhoof are somewhat 'hip', so they have their own crowd. Plus (if memory serves me correctly) Alexander Tucker also played (and he brings in a crowd to an extent) along with The Drones who were being touted as the 'next big thing' at the time by the music press...so it was a triple-puller in terms of audience

Damo Suzuki always pulls people out of the woodwork because of his history: the mention of can on a poster is always a crowd-puller...and he was backed by Al, Dave and the Courtesy Group who have a good local following...

The Nightingales pull out all the old Moseley crowd to reminisce about the 'golden days' in the mid-80's...
As does Ted Chippington (particularly as it was his first performance for a long time)...and - again - the Courtesy Group organised the gig so they brought their crowd...

Beware gents - I would hazard a guess at around 40 to 50 people...Hope I am wrong though...

The Actress & Bishop has a very nice upstairs live music room, good PA system, etc - although unfortunately I'm probably still barred from there.

Nice - 40 to 50 people in Cotteridge would be fine. As I said, the Hare and Hounds is a no go so it could be at towerofsong - a new folk-ish club in Cotteridge. We might be able to pull the punters with a support of richard burke (and a gas shepherds acoustic set?) Or, learn to drive get in a car and drive to coventry or nottingham to see Jack Rose instead.

I'll leave the decision open for message board encouragements for now: both Birmingham and Nottingham both got exactly 23 people at our Tight Meat gigs.

have you tried booking the jug for Jack Rose, if you did it with the chairs and tables out, it might be quite nice for 40/50 people.

Personally I'm finding it a struggle doing gigs in bham at the mo re: audiences and independent venues. (Especially the ones run by coke heads)
Without sounding too cynical, it is actually cheaper to travel to London or Bristol to see a band then it is on the whole to put them on in bham...

thanks for this, I'm not going to face the hassle of doing it all. "A promoter never enjoys their own gigs" seems to be ringing true and its months away yet.

23 people at both Tight Meat gigs?
Spooky.
This is going to set Mitton off again.

BTW, the Wednesday night blues gigs at the Newt which I mentioned earlier in this thread have now been cancelled due to lack of interest, so it would seem that even old tried and tested musical genres have a problem finding an audience in Brum, let alone outsider avant-garde freaky business.

It was a double disappointment for me to find that there was no music on at the Newt last night, as I'd cut short a very enjoyable day out in London to get back for it.
Indeed I'd even been getting on alright with an octogenarian retired philosophy lecturer in the French House who had on a previous occasion called me a provincial ignoramous on account of my Brummie mis-pronunciation of Felix Guattari.
I think I may have gone up a bit in his estimation by solving a cryptic crossword clue he'd been puzzling over (Parliamentarian should be kept in trousers), but I still find that, in general, native Londoners still equate a Brummie accent with intellectual inadequacy.
Or maybe the fact that I'm invariably drunk when I talk to them has something to do with it.

BTW, the crossword answer was, of course, private member.
Obviously.
