| Gravy Hole Rank: Oddie | Alex Henshaw MBE posted on: 3/1/2007 10:39:52 AM Chief test pilot for Supermarine at Castle Bromwich during WWII, he is reckonned to have test-flown over 2,300 individual aircraft, which is approximately 10% of all the Spitfires produced during the war. He died last week. Not a native Brummy but certainly an honourary one. He once flew a Spitfire down Broad St at an altitude of 50 feet. Upside down! Here's what he had to say: "In your book* you mention bringing Birmingham city centre to a standstill by rolling the Spitfire as you flew along Broad Street. Roughly how high were you from the people below?" "I'd have been doing it at about 50ft, I suppose. But you see I'm not proud of that incident. It was brought about because of the stupid instructions from both the Lord Mayor of Birmingham and the managing director of the factory for whom I worked."
