| DrVeraJenkins old dear Rank: Jasper | Car park research posted on: 4/5/2007 10:54:51 PM Help me to supplement my meagre pension by contributing to my community history publication on the car parks of central Birmingham: "More Car Parks Than Vienna - A Celebration and Oral History of Multi Storey Car parks in Central Brummagem" What are your memories of the car parks of Birmingham? What's your favourite view from the top level of one of our celebrated car parks? Which one has the narrowest bays and which has done the most damage to your car as you try to squeeze into a space? Which car park has the prettiest display of paint marks on the walls of it's ramps? What are your memories of returning to your car to find it has been vanalised, broken into or stolen? Share your anecdotes of being chased by perverts, accosted by drug addicts or tripping over sleeping homeless people in the stairwells. Which are the cheapest, least secure or darnright smelliest? Tell us your stories and get your memories published so that I can make some money out of you. |

replied on: 4/9/2007 11:15:31 AM ok.... looks like it's going to be a slimmer volume than I had hoped ....I may have to expand the subject material in that case... ...public urinals and telephone boxes. Surely there must be some nostalgic stories about these? Anyone remember when BRMB used to phone up public call boxes to give away cash prizes to whomever answered first and half a dozen people would kill each other or get run over trying to race each other to pick up the phone? |

replied on: 4/9/2007 8:09:30 PM I remember one week I went to Derby and there was a really safe car park with emergency buttons on every other pillar, alarm things under the cars, loads of light, gates and anything else you can think of to keep your car safe. The same week I went into West Bromwich and was less impressed with the car park there. It was gloomy and had a sign saying something like "if you have a problem/emergency go to the toilet attendant on the ground floor" I had my hubcaps nicked in there that day too. |

replied on: 5/4/2007 7:32:29 PM Yes West Brom is still a particularly unpleasant car park isn't it? "Oppressive" is the word I think the young new left would use... us oldies prefer "shit hole" or "shit howl" as the yam yam elders say.. Positive points, a nice panoramic view of Rowley Regis from the top level. Negative points, if you don't get run down by a Ring and Ride bus reversing up to Shobmobility, in addition research shows you are 65% more likely to contract a serious breathing disorder in the walk from our car to the shops in West Brom than any other car park in the West Midlands. |

replied on: 5/8/2007 11:09:29 AM The view from the top of the Bull Ring/Bullring carpark over Digbeth and parts of Highgate isnt too bad. I once gave a cigarette to a homeless lad who had been kicked out of Albert St multi storey. I also got caught by the British Transport Police along with seven of my mates, playing tracking 1-2-3 in the car park next to Wolverhampton Train Station on a school day. That is all. |

replied on: 6/24/2007 12:26:52 AM The multi storey at the Hockley Bling Quarter is pretty rank. I'm certain the car park and the Big Peg building it serves were built as kind of mirror images of each other. Both constructions give you a very similar queezy feeling as you struggle to navigate your way through them. I remember visiting an art exhibition in the basement of the Pig Peg once and writing in the comments book "the fire exit sign made me feel slightly more reassured". |
