| Birmingham City Council -UNCARING posted on: 11/4/2007 1:30:59 PM This is concerning a green wooded area on the corner of Woodcock Lane and Warwick Road, Acocks Green which is over 730 square metres and contains 20 trees as well as bluebells in the springtime. This precious green space has been sold off in an underhand manner by the city council's housing department for a fee of £6,500 to a local businessman for his own use. Some of the trees on the land date back to the original drive of Acocks Green House and the space was a part of the landscaping around two blocks of sheltered housing and council houses. The local people have enjoyed this piece of greenery for the last 50 yrs and were shocked when the now owner decided to try and chop the trees down. Fortunately they managed to stop the destruction and have placed tree protection orders on the trees. However in the last week a 2 metre fence has been placed all round this green space blocking off the enjoyment of the greenery for all. The only notice that the sale was to take place were two small ads in the Classifieds of the Birmingham Post in 2005, no local residents were consulted or informed. If they had been they could have at least had the opportunity to purchase the land themselves as a communal greenspace for everyone to enjoy. These places are precious and the council talk about creating thriving healthy communities and empowering local people to make the areas they live in more pleasant. Then they do something like this. They have caused real upset to a lot of local people. |
