Why change a bad thing?
posted on: 5/8/2003 4:32:19 PM

Birmingham is shit.

It's renouned around the world as a soul-less ugly concrete conurbation. Miles of suburbia and tiny piss-poor city centre.

The Brummie accent instantly conjures images of fat ugly stupid sun-burnt, lobster pink people in sombrero hats, plastic beads and bermuda shorts carrying plastic bags full of gristle sandwiches and sand - queing to pick up tatty lugguage that has already burst at the seams scattering skidmarked undercrakers across the concourse at Brum International.

The phrase "He could have whinged for Birmingham - and that's saying something!" is self explanatory, understood, translated and used by societies as far removed from one enother as eskimos and pygimies.

Barry from Auf Weidersehn Pet was a pale reflection of what Brummies are actually like in the minds of the rest of the world.

The one thing Birmingham can boast about is how utterly, devastateingly awfull it truly is.

Brummies everywhere should be proud and strive not to change a thing. Laugh while the world laughs at you. Cry and you're just another moaning Brummie git.

Barry in Auf Weidersehn Pet was from Wolverhampton.

Ahhhhhh - I forgot to mention the average Brummie's psychotic pedantry over piffling matters. Well done that chap.

Personally I'm happy to tar everywhere from Wolverhampton to Solihull, Stourbridge to Sutton Coldfield with the same big fat bristly brush.

The fact that Barry was from Wolverhamton possibly accounts for the fact he was a pale reflection of a Brummie.

Tim Spalls is an accomplished character actor after all and possibly toned down the performance.

And may one ask which paragon of civic pride you're from, Deckster?

Oh come on! Birmingham is "supposed" to be Englands second city!

Birmingham's the town with the massive and justified inferiority complex.

Birmingham's got the sillyist, most grating accent in the whole of the UK - and I include scouse and welsh in that - not to mention cornish.

Birmingham's got a website claiming "It's not Shite!"

All I'm saying is - Brummies should stand up and be proud of what they've achieved - The crappest town in Christendom!

Coventry is but a pale reflection with slightly more attitude and a hell of a lot less to care about.

Funny how people from outside the socio-cultural milieu where stigmatised accents such as those you mention are recognised do not discriminate on the same grounds as you and other small-minded people like you, isn't it?

"Coventry is but a pale reflection with slightly more attitude and a hell of a lot less to care about."

Didn't the specials write the song ghost town about coventry, which says it all really.

Did'nt the germans flatten Coventry???
Say's it all really.
I Dunno-first they bombed you,now they just own your factory's!!

The reason covvo's dislike the 021'ers is because when enjoying an all too rare sojourn abroad they always know they will have the conversation-
Person A-"good day sir, from where do you hail??"
Covvo-"Coventry"
Person A-"Isn't that part of birmingham??"

It's not that funny.

And I'm not discriminating - merely voicing a opinion. And that's what these posts are about isn't it? A little tongue-in-cheek, a little confrontational but totally harmless and not intended to offend. The associated website is entitled "Birmingham: It's not shit" afterall. The clue, the important factor, the glaring and obvious fact that you seem to have missed is . . . this isn't serious!

And out of everything I said, totally unreasonable as some of it was, the point you wish to raise is on the Birmingham accent!

People inside the "Socio-cultural milieu" like you should lighten up! I would say "cheer up" but you're probably a Brummie.

Possibly your sensitivitites are such that you shouldn't frequent newsgroups where people are able to take the piss out of themselves and are big enough to handle it.

"Didn't the specials write the song ghost town about coventry, which says it all really. "

Yeah - but they where harking back to a time when two tone exploded out of Coventry and is was, for a brief instant, not a totally embarressing place to come from.

Someone posted a reply that when you say you come from Coventry the reply is "Isn't that part of Birmingham". Well I personally haven't ever come across that reply - ever.

People from the UK generally say "Oh - I'm sorry" - and the rest of the world don't have a clue where it is. The point is, people never ask a Brummie where they're from. They know! The accent gives the game away immediately. And after that the conversation dies in strangled embarressment.

The Brummie accent says it all.

Re: "The Brummie accent says it all." You twat. When I listen to people like you, it makes me think that the government's plan to get 50% of school-leavers into university may be a little low.

Sorry. Maybe that wasn't a very reasoned argument, but people like you anger me. Even schoolkids at Key Stages 1, 2,3 and 4 are taught about dialect variation within the British Isles and are actively encouraged to question the stereotypes surrounding language use. Your remarks do nothing but betray your general lack of education and intelligence, I'm afraid.

You don't know anything about my general lack of intelligence and education. Only I know the full extent or otherwise of that.

Unfortunately, and I really do mean "unfortunately", people do get an instant impression from how people look, speak and - judging from your two responses - write! And they base the most ridiculous assumptions about levels of education on the flimsiest of evidence.

You have made a total judgment about "my" level of education from tongue in cheek comments I have made on this "fun" site. You ARE abusive and my impression of you is that you wander the world looking for things to get angry about.

I have seen your other posts where you accuse a contributor of being a "racist pig" - my reading of this contributors post was that they were absolutely not racist and the contributor was at pains to point this out to you.

I actually don't mind being called a "twat" by someone as silly as you. But accusing someone of being a racist is too big an issue and someone as silly as you causes more offence by throwing out comments like this than is ever caused by the harmless and fun posts on this site.

I'll say it again - this is a "fun" site. Stop taking the things written here so seriously.

And just to improve your general level of education - "dialect variation" (a phrase I assume you've made up) is not taught at KS1. Most schools teach some form of moral code as part of 'Citizenship' which is now part of the National Curriculum however this concentrates on much broader concepts than regional dialect.

I doubt very much that "dialect variation" enters the teaching plan at KS2 either but I'll check and let you know.

I'd hate to 'make up' facts to support an argument. Much better to find out first and not leap to a silly assumption.
