My own experience of working at Merry Hill Shopping centre can be seen in this wonderful book. I once stayed there overnight in the rundown, shabby, make-shift staffroom area at the bookstore where i worked. I witnessed the floor buffers and the eery empty stores that Catherine talks about in her book. I'd recommend this to anyone who has ever worked at a large shopping centre and felt subclass to the shoppers!

It's the old Big Issue vendor's trick of offering the "last" copy - they've always got a stack more.

I am reminded of the "gigantic ball of string" that was in the Evening Mail's classified ads section for months c. 1997 price £4.

My favourite shop however: Selly Oak Jumper World.

Edit: does 'safe for sale' mean they are selling a safe or that the things they have for sale are themselves tested and found "safe" ?

mine is possibly Enoch's Miscellaneous Stores, on the Stratford Rd - it's got a sign that says 'anything bought and sold'.

now that's what i call keeping the customers happy.

it's also been advertising a 'safe for sale' for as long as i can remember (6 years at least) - i think Enoch might need soem help from Trevor Beattie
