How to recognise an indian by their surname?
replied on: 12/9/2003 9:26:38 PM quote: I'm guessing you just met some really bad Trinidadians...we're not all like that, trust me. I apologize on their behalf But as for the looks part thats such a generalization. For me, anyone I meet can't tell that I'm from Trinidad. But then again I'm not very Trini so that could be it. |

How to recognise an indian by their surname?
replied on: 12/10/2003 7:02:19 PM That's what I see here in South Florida. I think ALL Indo-Trinidadian women are beautiful. Forget beautiful, sexy, gorgeous, regardless of how they've treated me. I tell everyone "Trini women are my weakness". And no matter how insecure I feel around them, I love being around them. Also, I've noticed I have a preference of being around Trinidadians and Guyanese more than Jamaicans. With the bad, there is always some good. |

How to recognise an indian by their surname?
replied on: 12/10/2003 11:25:34 PM Punjabis are the people from Punjab whereas Sikhs are people that follow the Sikh religion. So, in Punjab, there are Punjabi Sikhs, Punjabi Hindus, Punjabi Muslims and other religions too. Typically, Sikhs are from Punjab and speak Punjabi. And, I believe, Sat Sri Akal is a Sikh greeting. A Punjabi Hindu would probably just say Namaste. |

replied on: 12/11/2003 1:32:21 AM So, in that case it’s just about religion between Hindu & Sikh and not a race. I think Punjabi Sikh’s surname such as Singh, Kaur,Gill, etc, right?? Whereas Punjabi Hindu such as Oberoi, Arora,Kapoor etc.. Correct me if I was wrong.. Thanks. |

Most of us are not like that at all! And on knowing a Trini when you see one *raised eyebrow* Nah nah, I think those statements a a bit vague. I'm speaking as a Trini. Regards, Pretty Woman |

How to recognise an indian by their surname?
replied on: 1/3/2004 12:44:02 AM I'm sorry, but hey, there's more to it. I can tell which country your from, it's a God-given talent I guess! I didn't mean to offend anyone, and I didn' want to say anything. Yet, here in Ft. Lauderdale most of the Indian girls with the bushy bushy long wavy hair and/or red streaks, are from Trinidad. I don't mean to generalise, I just say based on what I see, every week. And trust me, it's not a select few, I've encountered thousands of Trini's at all these festivals they have here! |

How to recognise an indian by their surname?
replied on: 1/6/2004 8:50:38 PM wut i've found about east indian last names is that most of the names begin with ram or if the name in india end which a u ex sukhu the reverse name in the caribbean would be sookoo sukhoo, sookhoo adding double oo at the end and that in Jamaica you can't find a person with the plain name Singh they usually have something before singh ex mohansingh coomarsingh..and names like bhagwadin as an indian would have it;s bhagwadeen..but being dat im "east Indian" which i refer myself as Caribbean no indo in front just caribbean that we have been mixed down the line cause if u look at it we don't look like asian indians at all |

replied on: 1/11/2004 3:47:19 PM Preity Zinta is of British-Rajput descent and is a Himachali since she waa raised in Simla. Oberoi is a well-known Hindu name (at least in Jammu & Kashmir it is b/c of the famous Oberoi Hotel) Shah is a common Muslim last name, but you cant usually tell which region an Indian Muslim is from by their name. It is more common among Shias, though I have known Shias and Sunnis to usually have the same names. Shah is also very common in Gujarat and in the Hindu nation of Nepal. |

replied on: 1/11/2004 8:02:48 PM quote: Surnames with RAM are often descendants of middle and working class Hindus. In Jamaica, just how Chinese with a double surname drop one and leave it "Chin", East Indians add on religious words/names from the Gita and Mahabharat. It's also true, in the Caribbean and Mauritius, instead of a single vowel, it's doubled. (u = oo, i = ee) I don't know many Indo-Jamaicans that know of their past, or consider themselves East Indian. It's wrong to say Indo-Jamaicans don't look Asian Indian, because they are. Indian genes are strong: if not in your face, it shows in hair or eye texture. There's dozens of features that half-Indian people have. All Dougla people look Indian and have Indian features, and Black features. Most Indians in Jamaica joined the general population in creating a single culture and nationality. Yet, Hindus and Muslims are still visible and exsistant, and so are the holidays/festivals. |
