Did you know Nayagan was remade in Hindi as Dayavan with Vinod Khanna, Feroz Khan and Madhuri Dixit?

I have seen both and I really liked Nayagan as well. I always find Kamal Hassan's movies interesting because he is such a great actor. Another great movie with him and Sridevi is Moonram Pirai in Tamil or Sadma in Hindi. I cry everytime I see that movie.

"Moondram Pirai" is one of the Tamil films I've seen! What a heart wretching film, OMG the last scene with Kamal Hassan at the train station is really hard to watch, he was amazing.

I have yet to see the Hindi version of the film, "Sadma". I read Sridevi prefers her performance in the Tamil version better. Some day I will see Sadma to check it out for myself.

kalpana & bw501-

thanks for the info! i am a big kamalhasan fan, too, he was wonderful in Avargal, just wonderful! i'll try to find these films. i'm sure both of you ahve seen "pushpak"? have either of you seen the Tamil version of "Chachi 420"? i really want to see that, too.

we rented a DVD of AR Rahman Tamil songs, volume 3 and found a wonderful surprise - subtitles!!!! for the song lyrics! the other nice thing is that some of the songs are from films that were not supposed to be very good but the music is really wonderful - "Star" and "Parthale Paravasam" - I really like all the songs from both films (despite the fact that Star's music is just recycled from Thakshak! (i think this was during Rahman's "dark days" when he was working with Andrew Lloyd Webber!) but OH to hear SPB do the "Range De" song, 'Rasika Rasika' is something not to be missed as far as i am concerned!) it is a very good collection and so far all of the numbers are wonderful. oh, also, "Star" features the first song sung by Karthik - 'Nenthukitten.'

we'll be renting things for the holiday weekend so, hopefully, i'll have news next week!

Hi!

I was hoping to find "Nayagan" at the new store but, no luck! I really want to see this movie! I hope you won't be disappointed when I tell you that we rented "Minsara Kanavu" simply because it had subtitles! This was one of the first films we rented, at least six years ago, the Hindi version, "Sapnay." Our main reason for renting it was because we loved the songs. We found parts of it very confusing. Well, we enjoyed it very much and the song lyrics were subtitled, too. This is not a great film and it is kind of dumb in parts but the songs! Also, I had forgotten it was directed by Rajiv Menon. Prabhu Deva is so cool. One of my favorite scenes is when this bride named Sandhya is on a rooftop about to commit suicide. Prabhu was one of the guest to the wedding and is wearing a tuxedo. He goes out on a long beam by the rooftop to try and talk her down. He says "When you jump, be sure to go head first so you will die instantly! If you jump legs first, both your legs will be shattered, you'll become a hopeless case and forever be known as lame Sandhya." He is trying to distract her.

Another observation: people complain endlessly about Kajol not being a good dancer. I think she does a wonderful job in this movie! Especially with Prabhu! Even MADURI expressed fear at dancing with him in Pukar! But Kajol just lets her personality and enthusiasm shine and she does a great job! The Vennilave song!!!!! So Gene Kelly!

We also rented a film with a story by Mani Ratnam "Asai" but haven't watched it yet.

Remember the film curator at the museum? His girlfriend was in town but he was at a film festival in Colorado (I told him to be on the lookout for Maduri!) so we had his girlfriend over for dinner and a movie - twice. She loves Indian films and was complaining about the lack of Indian anything in Rome. We watched Kannatil Muthamittal and Rangeela. She loved both films and had the greatest comment (which I just posted in another discussion here) "Watching an Indian film is like having a very good meal. After it you are so satisfied!"

I just saw Okkadu. Donna is right, it really is a good one. Great fight scenes, and that bad guy (and his mother) are so terrible! Donna, I see what you mean about the leading man's one mistake. I was really surprised he did that, it seemed kind of out of character. You said one song took 11 days to film, which one was it?

Again this is a really good sort of action movie. Highly recommended!

Not at all about movies, but regarding the subject of Tamil songs vs. Hindi songs - one of my favorite singers is Susheela Raman, an Anglo-Indian singer, born to South Indian parents. Her CD Salt Rain is wonderful! She uses a base of South Indian sacred music, mixes it with more modern influences - and has created a haunting and beautiful album.

I have not yet seen any Tamil films (although I have Roja - the original - at home), I cannot say if this is anything like the music in Tamil films, but I wanted to reccomend her anyhow. I find her amazing.

That sound intriguing, DCgal. Is there someplace to listen to her music online?

OK Dmul53 - you've got me there (my age is showing). Being very low tech myself I couldn't tell you where to go to download the music. But you can start here - it's an extensive bio and some samples of her music.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks for the link, DCgal. Her music if very different, and original. A little too jazz/blues for my taste, though.

Tamil action! Hooray!

One of my Tamil efriends sent me a copy of Salt Rain last year, I like it. Robert likes it more than I do.

I am so happy that one of you watched Okkadu! I loved this movie so much, as everyone knows already :-) Yes, Mahesh Babu's one mistake! Too bad. I think it was the last number that took 11 days to shoot. Did you just LOVE the whole opening part of the film? With the West Side Story influence than that amazing song?!

Over the weekend we rented the Vikram film Dhool, it was a huge hit many months ago. We liked the second half better than the first half. It is about three people from a small village who go to meet a government official to complain about pollution in their water source. I thought the first half had way too many fights, but Vikram IS and action guy. Joythika costarred and, for the first time, did not get on my nerves. Music is by Vidyasagar with some wonderful bouncy rural songs and a lovely ballad sung by my heart-throb, Shankar Mahadevan.

They eventually beocme embroiled in local politics and corruption.

Yes the beginning of Okkadu was really funny. You know, in spite of being kind of action-packed and intense it had some really light moments. The guy at the video store had recommended it to me and so I'm really glad he did.

I have a question for you donna. I'm very much a classical dance enthusiast. Have you found any films with really good classical dance sequences? Here's what I already know:

I've found that if Tamil films have classical dance it's often bharat natyam. Kamalhassan for instance dances in Salangai Oli and Ek Duje Ke Liye. Prabhu deva has bharat natyam dances in Kadhalan. I recently stumbled on the actress Bhanupriya who is a _great_ dancer (I've seen songs from only one movie of hers: Swarnakamalam). From the really old tamil films (i.e. 50's-60's) the Travancore sisters, including Padmini from Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai, were really excellent (I've seen Thooku Thooki which had all three sisters). Vyjayanthimala and Kamala Laxman were also great dancers during that time period. Donna, have you seen anything with Bhanupriya? I've also heard that Shobhana is a great dancer but I don't know which movies of hers have good dances. Has anyone seen any good movies with either Bhanupriya or Shobhana?

I just watched a Padmini film with her doing classical dance that was really good.   "Thillana Mohanambal" (Tamil - 1968). I rented it and it was released by Ayngaran International DVDs.
Padmini is a great dancer! (I posted a couple pictures of her from the film on my web site: http://www.bollywood501.com/classic_f/Padmini/ThillanaMohanambal/index.html

In the Tamil 'Mythologicals' there seems to be a lot of psudo-classical dance. Have you seen any of them? Sivaji Ganesan and Gemini Ganesan were really good dancers too.

I'd write more about the movie and will later but I have to go out to eat dinner!!!!

pelagia,

I have seen just a few films from the 70s so far, nothing older - yet! New titles seem to be coming out regularly and we are always on the lookout for new Tamil films because we love them so much!

Okkadu!!!!!! The guy at the store suggested this one to us, too, we rented it three times and intend to buy it. I thought the whole opening of the film, right up to the first song was simply fantastic!

I have added the films mentioned to my list, thanks! I can ask my Tamil firends for some good films with classic dance, too.

I was just doing some research on Padmini (the most famous of the Travancore sisters) and I found out that the Tamil actress Shobhana is the neice of Padmini! This totally adds to the belief that 'everyone in Indian cinema is related Now I HAVE to see some Shobhana movies!!!

Isn't Shobhana the one in the movie, Mitr, by Revathi? She was stellar in that movie.
