What points did you enjoy the best, and what parts were just horrible? Was the acting bad, or par excellence? How were the songs, and did the picturization live up to your expectations? And what did you think of the script? Feel free to post all that and more. The flood gates are open. |

replied on: 4/29/2003 5:50:03 PM Okay, I have to 'fess up. I planned to watch it this past weekend, but I've been sick with the 'flu and didn't feel up to it. I was hoping I'd be able to grab it tomorrow and join in, but either people are unaware of the thread, or nobody bothered! *sigh* |

replied on: 4/29/2003 5:56:09 PM Are you referring the older version of Padosan with Sunil Dutt, Mahmood, and Saira Banu or Nayee Padosan, which is not yet released until May 2nd according to IndiaFM's release date page? |

replied on: 4/29/2003 6:24:56 PM We're talking about the one with Sunil Dutta, Mahmoood, Kishore Kumar and Saira Banu. I tried to watch it. Three times. Never made it all the way through. The first time I fell asleep 15 minutes into the film. Okay, okay, it was 11 PM on Easter Sunday, and I was the family chauffeur (4 hours of driving total, in a car that had trouble pulling the body weight in our car) so I was exhausted. Hey, the hilarity of trying to get that car to move would be perfect for a Hindi movie! The other two times that I tried to watch it, I still didn't manage to get through it. At one point, I was even "watching" it at 2x speed and just reading the subtitles--even that didn't hold my interest. My dad, on the other hand, watched it from start to finish. He says that in the Bengali version, the guy was worse, meaning that the character was even more naive and silly/goofy. As I told Sam in my other post about Padosan, I don't see how that character could have come across as any sillier that the one in this film. My dad also said that the movie got better when the guy and the girl meet, but I never got that far. I was waiting to see what people said here before attempting to see the movie again. I did try to watch the parts with Kishore Kumar, and saw about 5 minutes of that, I think. Pakeezah, on the other hand, was really good. (I rented both at the same time.) We started watching that before we left on Easter Sunday, and during the car ride back, our 74 year old American friend, who had never seen a BW movie before, said, "We *have* to see the end of the movie when we get back!" and so we did. And after watching Pakeezah, we tried to watch Padosan, and gave up, due to the aforementioned exhaustion. |

replied on: 4/29/2003 8:16:30 PM I also saw Pakeezah since i couldnt get the subs on padosan to work. That ending was so excruciating. I couldnt handle it. WHY WHY WHY do all movies have to end with something like that. I wanted to jump up (with shoes) and grab her. ow. but yeah it was pretty good, a little odd at times. |

replied on: 4/29/2003 8:50:20 PM So why don't you guys discuss Pakeezah, then? If I recall correctly, Meredith was interested in other people's impressions on it anyway, and it's better to have some discussion than none. Besides, if someone else wants to discuss Padosan here, they can still go ahead and do so. I think we could handle two discussions. |

replied on: 4/30/2003 12:12:09 AM Well, Pakeezah was the movie that actually incited my questions about prostitutes, becuase it really seemed like she wasnt sleeping with anyone. I also didnt think it was that romantic, the whole note in the foot thing. I guess it wa nice that he liked her despite her being a "prostitute," which does still confuse me a bit Also, given that Pakeezah is an urdu word (i think), is this movie Urdu? |

replied on: 4/30/2003 10:39:05 AM Pakeezeh is a word from Old Persian, I believe (can't be Arabic; they don't have the letter "p") and has thus entered Urdu, but I was under the impression that it is also used in Hindi, hai na? |

replied on: 4/30/2003 3:24:04 PM I have no idea if the word Pakeezah originated in Old Persian, but I wouldn't be surprised. When the Turks invaded, they used Persian as the literary language and language of the court until Hindi and Persian (and Arabic to an extent) all mingled together to create a common tongue between the ruling Turks and the natives. Thus Urdu was born ('urdu' is derived from 'ordu' or "military camp" in Turkish). |

replied on: 5/1/2003 2:44:58 AM Did anyone find the note in the foot romantic? I thought it was just creepy the way he just stared at her. Not romantic at all. I thought he was going to kill her or something. |

replied on: 5/1/2003 4:56:40 PM That was for Pakeezah. I'll explain if you want, but i guess first you should know its not Padosan, but Pakeezah, which im told is much better. Anyways, i guess it doesnt give away the plot, so ill write it. There is this beautiful girl who is a "prostitute," once of the best dancers. Anyways, a long story happens and she is forced to leave the brothel that her aunt or someone owns and go to a new one to protect herself. she is in her compartment sleeping and a creepy looking man comes in, sits down, stares at her for a while, reads her diary, steals her bookmark. Then he notices her feet, which have been painted red and still have bells on. He writes a note about how Beautiful her feet are and how they should never be soiled, puts the note between her toes, and leaves (with the bookmark). later on, all she can do is think about the man who wrote the note even as she is courted by the richest and cutest man in town. And i found it all creepy. |
