Evidently BW films are some sort of 'cultural curiosity' to entertain him in his world of white middle America smugness!

That is the perfect wording! Exactly the same feeling I have but could not find the right words. Thanks kat.

Edited to add --> This writer seems to value being witty rather then truly informing (or even getting his facts straight). Is the purpose of this article meant to promote Bollywood or enlighten those unaware of how wonderful it is? Or is it meant to make this smug man feel superior? I also agree this guy just doesn't get it!

What a homework assignment? He works at Time magazine and he expects people to do his job for him? I can't help but feel he is just trying to capitalize on Bollywood and that his motivation is not sincere.
