Engine system problem.....
replied on: 9/6/2005 8:12:52 AM

Installed the new tank and took her to the field - still had problems starting. The people at the field said to take the cowl off and try again. I did with no luck. Rick said to take her home and try again tomorrow.

I was fully prepared to send the engine back to Saito for repair/diagnostics and wrote up documentation to support that.

I set the plane up last night and I still had about 12 oz of fuel left in the tank. I walked away for a while and when I came back I saw the problem. The carb was filling up with fuel flooding out. When I assembled the tank I put the tubes straight through. The level of the fuel in the tank was higher than that of the carb - and since the fuel tube was coming straight out - flodding was occurring.

I removed the tank and put a 90 degree bend in the tubeso that the fuel tubing is higher than the top of the tank. -

Problem solved.

I reset high and low speeds. I am using Heli Fuel and it seems to make a big difference.

Low speed is 1700 - 2000 RPM and High speed is 10800 reduced to 10200 on the rich side.

The Saito ran good last night - crisis averted!

I took the P 51 to the field and noticed a little bit of fuel running out of her. I checked all of the fuel lines and no holes (they were new) and so I had to take her home and rip her apart. I found out that the fuel tank was split along the seam on both sides of the stopper.

I cannot get a direct replacement so I am going with a DUBRO tank. I am also opting to have a third tube in the tank with a clunk for fueling/de-fueling.

Hopefully she will fly again.
