The Awakening of a Scout
posted on: 2/3/2003 12:40:42 AM

OOC: There has been an eruption of RP character stories in my PA - Avian Technology and Trade. I thought I'd share mine with the first fan site I ever frequented.

quote:
It never seems to be enough does it? I know it has to mean something. I know everything happens for a reason. But why did it have to happen again? Why do people do the things they do?

I know that asking my datapad deep questions that can't easily be answered isn't one of the smarter things I've done, but who else do I turn to? I was born into a beautiful world by two wonderful musicians. Both struggling. And both unsure of the future. My mother's life was very hard and led her into a very deep state of denial. My father didn't know what to do to help and he didn't want to. My mother found all of her friends leaving her side and when I was four, my parents separated. My dad traveled from planet learning from whoever would teach him. He still writes sometimes, but I've come to expect nothing from him ever again. Now that I'm alone my mother looks to me to solve her problems. And I can't. And because of it she blames me instead. I met someone in an alley walking home the other day and he sold me a fake identification. Instead of using it to buy things that might make life easier, I find myself wandering around the city, from one cantina to another, losing my life at the bottom of a glass. I never look at anything but my feet when I walk. I run into guys that no one would want to get within three blocks of and get in more trouble than one person should ever be in. They told me tonight was a wake-up call. And it's not one that I wanted to get. They murdered my best friend.

Mom, if you're read this. I will always love you. Please know that I am doing this to protect you.

Jaero laced up his boots, put on his jacket, took his backpack and walked out of his house, never to return. As he walked down his moonlit street, all of the wonderful memories of his past flashed through his mind.

He remembered when his parents were still together, his daddy brought him a baby Tusk Cat to care for because he had a gift with animals. This one's parents were both brutally murdered while it watched from its den, a few feet away. When it was given to Jaero, it took him on as his brother. They were about the same size, and did just about everything together. Jaero named him Aurian, after a great animal tracker his father often told him about before bed. Aurian went everywhere Jaero did. They shared an unspoken bond. Aurian never walked behind him, as pets do, and Jaero never rode him, as most Tusk Cats were - not unless it was needed. Aurian never held a grudge against him, was always there for him, and loved him more than any other. Aurian was the only true friend Jaero ever had.

He remembered the various times throughout his life where something of his future would be said. The last time he saw his father, he had just come home from being away for three years. He looked peaceful and happy for the first time in his life. But to Jaero's dismay, he would only be staying until morning. That night Jaero woke up very late and walked downstairs to see if Daddy was gone. He found the two of his parents talking, his mother in tears. He overheard his Daddy say, "I can't come back here again. I'm so sorry. I don't know if you believe in this kind of thing, but our boy has a very old soul, and you have to take care of him." A few years later, he had been going through some crates in the house and found a letter hidden inside one that was addressed to him. It was from his father.

quote:
Little Jaero,

I'm so sorry that I could not be there to see you grow up. Please believe that I wish more than anything that I could have been there for you. But I had to follow my own path. I write this letter to you now because I want to help you find yours. I am on Dathomir training in the ancient ways of the Scouts. Last night I had a vision. The High Shaman came to me and said, "I know your son." I want you to know that when you are able to, I want you to come see me here as soon as possible. You will do great things, my son. Great things. Please give my love to your mother.

I love you. I'm proud that you are my son.

He was still too young at the time to know what any of this meant, but he kept the letter like it was a part of him. It was the only thing his father had left behind. Aside from that letter, he never got any other directions as to what his path in life might be.

There weren't very many happy moments in Jaero's past. Everywhere he looked he saw pain, sorrow, and malice. He saw it even where most wouldn't. There were some things that Jaero could do that no one around him seemed to be able to. He would look at someone and know what they were feeling and even how their day went. Whenever someone looked at him, he sensed it, and turned to meet their gaze. He didn't talk much, and all of his posessions were only things that he really needed, or that were really special to him. Especially tonight.

When he let his mind stop wandering, he stood at the entrance of a cantina he used to frequent. He took one glance, shook his head, and forsook the life he used to live as he turned and walked towards the spaceport.

Jaero was surprised when he made it to the spaceport unchecked and unchallenged. He had been warned again and again and knew he had to take the hint before he caused anyone else to get hurt. He walked to the market to buy a blaster. Something drew him to a vendor setting in a corner. As Jaero approached the vendor, he could make out a frail old man with a very weathered face that was plagued with scars and burns. He picked out an old DL-44 Blaster Pistol; he'd always loved that model. He only had enough money to pay for the transport so he traded a piece of body armor he had fashioned in his spare time. As he turned to leave, the old vendor gave him a queer look. When Jaero started towards the spaceport, the old man stood up and said shouted in his frail voice, "Are you so blind? He died for you!" When Jaero looked back, there was no one there. Jaero hung his head and walked away in a stupor. What did that old man mean?

His mind wandered for what seemed like an age. He thought most of all about the night before, the worst night of his life:

quote:
It was dusk and there was an electricity in the air. The kind where you know any second, it's going to rain. I was on the way home from a bar I'd hit after work and I found my front door lock smashed and the door cracked. I opened the door and stood there in shock for a minute trying to rationalize what I saw. Amazingly the outer walls were still intact, but the only thing that remained inside were the support beams and rubble. I found fragments of a concussion grenade among the various pieces of what used to be furniture and transparisteel windows. I waded through the sea of destroyed appliances to find Mom lying face down on the kitchen floor, barely breathing. I stood over her for a few minutes while memories of our past ran through my mind. It shouldn't end this way for her. Then something in my mind clicked - where was Aurian?! I ran upstairs and was amazed to find it in virtually untouched. There was no sign of Aurian.

My body went half-numb as I walked slowly through my house. I snapped out of it for a few moments only to call a medic, but I had to find Aurian. He would not just leave. I guess it was my fault for going to that bar. He hates them and never goes with me. I walked outside and stared aimlessly, still amazed at what had just happened. I started to retrace my steps back to the bar when I hit a very odd set of tracks. They looked like those of a Tusk Cat but the feet were splayed in odd ways and it looked as if the animal had been dragged. All of the sudden it started to pour, making the tracks extremely hard for the untrained eye to follow. I walked in the direction that the struggling tracks were going for about a mile when I finally saw it... a small puddle of blood. Just a few drops, and then a few more a few feet further down the path. A chill ran down my spine and I took off running as fast as I could. They took Aurian!

The sky rumbled and thundered as I ran. Lightning flashed in the clouds above and in the distance and illuminated four big silhouettes. As I got closer I could make out a fifth. It was a lot smaller than the others. It was backed into a corner trying to defend itself from the other four. When I got within shouting distance, one of them spotted me and pulled out a blaster. He shot the fifth shape in the corner. The big four turned toward me and glared. I couldn't make them out through the tears and rain. My thoughts were clouded by anger and I could barely hear through it. One of them yelled, "You should do what you're told next time, Jaero!" Now I knew it was Aurian. By the time he pulled out his blaster, it was too late.

I don't remember what happened or what I had done, but when my thoughts cleared, I found three of the four men lying around me. I was holding one of them in my lap, his neck snapped almost in two. The other two were in no better condition. The biggest of the three had a bloody footprint from my boot on his crushed throat and the other's ribs were smashed into his lungs. The fourth must have escaped.

I didn't know that I was capable of something so terrible. I pushed the one with the broken neck off of me and stared at my bloody hands. After a while, I stood up. My head was reeling and there was a lump in my throat the size of one of these men. I couldn't move, I was so disgusted. All I managed to do was vomit from the horror. What had I done?

A soft cry from Aurian echoed in my head as he used his last trace of strength to limp over to me and lie down on my lap. He breathed his last few breaths before the last shred of happiness I'd ever known left me forever. I had nothing left. I wanted to die.

Jaero snapped out of it to hear a deep, mocking voice from behind say, "You may want to put that blaster away before someone gets hurt."

Jaero turned around to see a large man standing before him. He was pretty buff and had soft brown hair. The blaster that hung loosely at his hip and the battle-scared jacket made Jaero think that this man was pulled right out from those old smuggler tales you here about Han Solo from time to time. To Jaero's surprise, he said, "You look like you could use a drink. Come with me." Jaero looked a little miffed but the man seemed trusting enough. He put the blaster in his jacket pocket and followed the man into the cantina by the marketplace.

They sat in a corner near the entrance. Jaero was not in the mood to be led and yet the stranger paid little attention to his feelings. The stranger ordered a cold Blue Dwarf and offered one to Jaero, who prompty turned him down. The man grinned and took a deep breath.

"Jaero, our meeting was no accident." Startled by what this man had to say, Jaero put his hand inside his jacket to grab his blaster.

"Easy, kid! I'm not one of them. Let me explain." The man glances across the room. "Then again, maybe this isn't the best place. Friends of yours?" He motions to two two huge men with blaster rifles across the room making their way towards him. Before Jearo can react, the man puts his hand on Jaero's side of the table and winks, "By the way, the name's MacGregor."

Jaero didn't even blink before MacGregor shot up from his seat, pivoted towards the two men, and shot them each in both shoulder. Jaero didn't even see the man take the blaster out of the holster. Every eye in the bar was fixed on the two of them. MacGregor took a handful of credits from his pocket and carefully stacked them on the table.

"Close your mouth, kid. It's time to go.", he said grinning.

"You look like you just gave birth. Relax, kid. Nothing's going to touch us in this ship." said MacGregor wryly. Jaero could do nothing but sit in awe of this man. He seemed to know how the world worked in every way; he didn't seem to like it, yet but he played along. It was almost as if he thought it was funny. Jaero couldn't understand him no matter how much he tried.

"Well, you want to know why I saved your ass back there or are you just going to stare at me for the rest of the trip?!", said MacGregor a little offput.

Jaero rubbed his eyes and shook his head to clear his mind. "You know, come to think of it I would like to know who you are and where the hell we're going. I haven't exactly been having a good week, MacGregor.", he retorted.

MacGregor smirked, "Like I said, it was no accident that we met. The two men in the cantina had been part of the gang that mysteriously lost three of its members last night." He grinned at this. "They'd been tipped off by the one that escaped. They also weren't too smart. I'd had a long conversation with the two of them in the cantina before they spotted you this morning. They spilled the entire story. I don't want to get into it all that much, because you already know why they were after you. ...Kid, how the hell did you get yourself in so much trouble?!"

"I don't even remember. Some people are nothing but hateful. Besides, that's behind me now. I'm never going back there." said Jaero, his eyes welling with tears. "I'm kind of curious though. Why would you help someone like me?"

"You've got a good heart, kid. And from what those two idiots back there told me this morning, you did nothing wrong. You may think that I lack good ethics because I'm a smuggler, but I'm still human, Jaero." said Angus. "...I'm sorry about what happened to your friend."

After a few minutes Jaero replied, "MacGregor, I don't think they told you everything.", his voice filled with regret.

"Kid, I don't care. I know enough. We've all done some pretty horrible things. Just as we've done great things! But, like you said, It's the past. Look to the future, kid. Look to the stars."

Jaero looked at his feet.
