No Jump = Doom?

Can someone explain why the devs would not include jumping in SWG? I've played... um, all of 2 MMORPGs as of today and neither one let you jump, and I always wondered why there wasn't any.

Are is there no jumping in DAo, WoW or Planetside, too?

Simple, too difficult to implement on a game of this type.

No Jump = Doom?
replied on: 2/26/2003 2:37:38 PM

well like I said, I never played any other MMORPG besides the one I mentioned.

The only reason I ask is that I feel kind of trapped by my surroundings if I can't jump. For instance, getting caught some small object and having to walk around it is really annoying when you are running around somewhere in the world.

Also, I've found that games seem kind of ethereal without being able to jump, like your avatar is chained to the ground for whatever reason. It just feels weird...

Anyways, in terms of it being "too hard to impliment", I can't see that as being a valid reason since there are a lot of things that were way harder than having a char jump that were implimented, Ryquin. Of course, I don't know jack about programming or the limitations of an online envoironment so if anyone would like to explain why jumping is a huge deal in online games, please feel free. :-)

One of the more spectacular moves available to Jedi has been the Force assisted jump - is this affected as well? As disappointing as it is not to have an ordinary person being able to have a dynamic upwards motion, it'd be almost crippling for the Jedi to lack this impressive move.

I don't think that lacking a force-jump move in an RPG is going to be crippling in the slightest. In JK2:JO definitely but that was a FPS. I'd think that it'd be much more crippling for a Jed to lack....say a Lighsaber or the basic sense abilities.

Am I not understanding what you all mean by jumping? EQ has jumping(ie you can jump over gaps and if you swim skill is high enough you can literally jump out of the water to a ledge above) I imagine that if this is the kind of jumping you are talking about then they will have no problems implementing it. The latest screen shots of the hunt show one of the Kuundu(sp?) performing a jumping attack as well so it looks like jumping will be a part of the game.

I was referring to a comment made my a dev that stated that jumping would be purely a cosmetic feature and that it would not serve as a way to explore areas in the game world.

Jumping was in DAoC and I found it very annoying. Much of the time I was surrounded by Short Attention Span types acting like pogo sticks. I'm not an immersion nut but my goodness...

Jumping was also in AC. Not as many Idjits but there were dungeons that called for lots of fairly accurate jumping. If you're not a twitchy type [and I'm not] it could get frustrating. I had to get my [then] 11 year old son to take over the keyboard

No jumping other than an emote is fine by me.

aah, I see. Well I would have liked Thief-style (the game, my edios) jumping. FYI, in Thief your character's jumping is pretty realistic for an athletic 20-35 year-old and Garret (the dude) can also heft himself up onto ledges by walking to them and holding jump.

In terms of actual jumping, he's no track&field star (like many of us) so I think that basic jumping abilities would be nice for these purposes, not for the dungeon jumping you were talking about but just for the sake of a more interesting static world.

Having done a stint as one of the volenteer CS people on a MMO where you can jump (AO) I'm here to tell you it's WAY more trouble from a CS point of view then you'd expect. Players were FOREVER jumping places you wouldn't expect them to and slipping between zone boundries, behind objects they shouldn't be able to get behind, through the ground, underneith trees, etc.... I must have fixed literally hundreds of those
